I have a pair of Saxony ducks from Holderreads and love them. The hen hatched out clutch of eggs and is a great mom- very protective, but not mean to me.
I might be interested in a adult runner drake- I sent you an e-mail before I saw this thread- I am in Asheville but my mom lives in Charlotte... so I find myself down that way. I have some promising looking Saxony/Appleyard crosses if you are interested in trading....
As luck would have it, I have ended up with two standard Silver Appleyard drakes and no females. However, one of the drakes and one of my runner hens have fallen in love (they have been inseparable for months and months). I haven't hatched any of the eggs because I wasn't sure if it was a good...
Wow! You are amazing to take on that adventure! Thumbs up to you and those who helped you! I could adopt a few girls if you end on getting a duckpool set up coming south- I am in Western NC. Would come right over if I lived closer. I LOVE the picture of them all in the car- I get a lot of...
This is my first year with hatching ducks and I have had several batches so far. I have had several hatch in the incubator, and a lot of problems I contributed to incubator issues and my own mistakes. I also had some chickens hatch out some duck eggs and that went a little better, but still...
My drakes are ...um...er...rather overzealous...which is really hard on the girls. I am having to keep everyone separated right now. I thought this would just happen for a bit in the spring- how long does this last. Will they calm down enough to get out of jail and act responsible anytime...
I have a batch of ducklings (1-3 weeks old) that was out and about free-ranging today with their chicken mamas. I noticed this evening that they had strings of slobber drooling out of their mouths. They were outside, not under a light, with unlimited access to food/water. I did notice that...
I am in Asheville, my Mom lives in Charlotte. I do see some duck trades in the future...! Looks like i need to get another incubator, so I can start the mutts, then start the purebreds- how long does the breeding season last?
Andrea
Ah-ha! iamacuriositycat, I see that you are from Charlotte, perhaps I will go ahead with the mutts and bring the leftover's to you next time I am in town, lol. What colors of runners do you have- we are getting in to breeding them, we might need to keep in touch for introducing new bloodlines.
I have thought of that. Runners crossed with Saxony? Standard Silver Appleyard crossed with Runners and Khaki? I am just not positive there is a market for these ducklings, hmmmm...
I am not really sure what the term would be, but here is the situation. My flock has all been running together, but now that breeding season has arrived, I have separated everyone out by breed. Is there a waiting period between when a flock goes from a free love situation before the eggs will...
Today is day 28 for the duck eggs in my incubator- my first hatch. Last night when I got home from work I could hear peeping and see some of the eggs shaking, this morning, still no pips. Once they are peeping and shaking, how long should I expect to wait before they break through the shell...
Thanks y'all! It is a long time to wait just to screw up at the end, so now I am getting nervous, lol. I think I will candle the two eggs I think are dead again- I could see a much smaller embryo/shadow/dark spot than what was in the rest of the eggs at this point. One of them had a really...
I am on day 23 of my duck egg incubation. I just candled all the eggs to see what was going on. Two I think are dead, sad, but par for the course. Several I could see definite movement and feel good about, but most of them were just dark, except for the air sac, and maybe a little margin...
