    Looking for chickens

Where are you? We are in New York City and have a 13 week old Silkie that has just started to crow. We cannot keep him and would love to find him a good home. He is buff and black and was hand raised and very gentle and easy to handle. Has a very sweet little quiet chatty voice and loves to sit...

Free in New York City: Chocolate/Silver Birchen English Orpington Bantam 1 month old cockerels

Two hand raised and very sweet boys free if you can come collect them! We are located in Harlem New York. These cockerels are from eggs hatched from a certified NPIP farm. They have different coloring; one a warmer "milk choc" brown/silver birchen and the other being more of a "dark choc"...

Sick hens: one lethargic, one agitated, all now panting.

Ah yes, I understand all of what you are saying and I really appreciate the help you have offered. The droppings were not the normal smelly ones - I figured the illness OR the Corid. They had an unpleasant "rotten plastic" smell. Just putting this out there as a possible clue!? They do have...

Is my chicken sick or am I over-reacting?

Hi, I am following this thread as I look for answers for my own lethargic hens. I hope your girl is ok and from all the searching I have done over the past few days it does sound like Corid is a good place to start.

Sick hens: one lethargic, one agitated, all now panting.

Thank you so much rebrascora! This is valuable information and I may be learning the hard way from mistakes on this occasion. We had chickens for years when I was a kid and I only remember feeding them wheat and they foraged, but perhaps my memory has deleted a pellet supply as well. I will...

Sick hens: one lethargic, one agitated, all now panting.

Thanks for responding! I have been checking crop daily for last four days. It has been empty the whole time. I have four hens and two others are also panting and acting strange so I have ruled out an individual issue and looking at contagions. It looks as though we might lose one hen (my...

Sick hens: one lethargic, one agitated, all now panting.

One of my 1 year old bantam hens is looking like we might lose her. She became lethargic about four days ago and stopped eating and drinking. Her droppings have been a bit watery but hardly any at all over the last couple of days. (No sign of worms or blood). Only other symptom is panting...

    Yolk sac not absorbed

This morning she was hobbling around on splayed legs and toes curled. We have made a hobble and taped her toes and she's sitting in a donut. She is pecking at things but no food has gone down. She has had a tiny bit of water. There is still a bulge on her navel, not much smaller than yesterday...

    Yolk sac not absorbed

So we're keeping her in the incubator. The humidity is still high. Should it stay high? Also she has not fluffed up at all. It looks more like the fluff is gelled down than actually wet.

Chick born with yolk sac outside

Curious to know how the chick is? Did she make it? We have a new chick in the incubator with a pea sized egg yolk in sac still on the outside. Doesn't seem to be absorbing but she looks like she might be strong enough to get through the night.

    Yolk sac not absorbed

Thank you so much for this advice. She's still here and we are being very patient! The yolk is the same size... If she pulls thru she will be loved like crazy so we are very grateful to hear you think she will be OK with enough human attention. Then when big enough she will be integrated with...

Seeking new homes for 3 month old Heritage Breed Roosters!

Thank you Johnathan! We found a home for the two Wyandotte's. The Barnevelder is still here and no sign of crowing yet. He is growing into an awesome looking bird and still a super nice boy. We just attempted another Barnevelder hatch but due to damaged eggs it has been quite heartbreaking...

    Yolk sac not absorbed

Chicken friends, we are seeking advice and moral support! Yesterday was hatch day only we already knew we may be in for disappointment. We had a dozen chicken eggs shipped USPS and the breeder did an awesome job of packing and labeling the box. However the box was damaged and came off the truck...

    Dumb chickens?

We have 4 Wyandotte bantams that are about 2 months old. They took a lot of coaxing to climb the ramp to sleep in their coop when we first moved them outside. The kids tried walking them up the ramp and we ended up keeping them in with an evening snack of rolled oats. Now they tuck themselves in...

Seeking new homes for 3 month old Heritage Breed Roosters!

Oh do it! They are such a captivating breed. We love our 2 Wyandotte girls and wish we had space for more. (We can fit 5, maybe 6 hens all up but have some Barnevelder eggs in the incubator now... The Wyandotte roosters are something else tho. Can't get over how friendly and gentle they are...

Seeking new homes for 3 month old Heritage Breed Roosters!

Thank you yes! We hope so... trying to toughen up and consider the alternative as time passes. Funny thing is after that initial and most excellent round of crowing (our 7 year old kiddo ran out and shushed him), he hasn't tried it again since... at least while we are home!
