Interesting to find all the fellow chicken friends here in NJ. If anyone is interested there is a guy in Lakewood that has a good variety of birds of all kind. Just got a white leghorn, a black sumatran (looks like a crow), and nice silver blue guinea hen from him. I can give you his number if...

    A chicken's summer diet, please read :)

Mine get lots more vegetables in the summer. Cucumbers that have gotten too big, lettuce and other greens and tomatoes that are not perfect for human consumption. They especially love the seeds in the tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelon.

Great article, I just use a 60 watt bulf for a few hours each night and close their door to the outside. A window is left open at the top about 2 inches for ventilation.

Hi all, Bought these 4 birds in April. THought they were all hens but one turned out to be a big beautiful roo. Anyway, they have started to lay. They eggs are small and darker in color than my rhode island reds and other brown eggs, but not the deep chocolate brown I have seen on cuckoo...

    Hens Laying in the Winter

Hi, Here is central NJ I use artificial light to extend the day 16-17 hours or so. That works well, eggs they keep laying. I also find that too much light, (keeping it on all night) really wears them out. They get stressed, loose feathers and stop laying. They need a rest, and a month of...

    Worried about coming cold...15 below!

I see some of you worry about the drafts, and I do too. But I always keep a window cracked, about an inch or so. I thought one should always have some ventilation in the hen house, even in cold months. Is this true? Thanks Rob in Central NJ>

How do you water your chickens in the winter?!

My birds don't like snow much and usually stay in the coop when it snows. I use a heated galvanized base outdoors in winter, and in the hen house there is also a plastic waterer too, that is set up on a few cinder blocks, so the birds don't usually mess it up. That one is not usually frozen...

Soft Shelled Eggs for Two Weeks Now

I just wanted to report back to those who helped me with the soft shelled egg problem. My hens are doing much better. I include oyster shell at all times, cut down on the winter lighting, give a can of cat food every other day, and include a vitamin electrolyte supplement in the water. Seems...

Soft Shelled Eggs for Two Weeks Now

Hi All, I have been reading past postings about soft shelled eggs, and most of what I see is that calcium is needed. I know my hens get enough calcium. I supplement their feed with crushed calcium and provide yogurt and cottage cheese at least once a week. However, for the past two to three...

Why you can't give chickens milk

I think I will just continue to be sensible, and feed a little milk or left over cottage cheese from time to time. I have not had any problems so far, and I think it helps supplement the calcium. Rob in central NJ
