Interesting to find all the fellow chicken friends here in NJ. If anyone is interested there is a guy in Lakewood that has a good variety of birds of all kind. Just got a white leghorn, a black sumatran (looks like a crow), and nice silver blue guinea hen from him. I can give you his number if...
Mine get lots more vegetables in the summer. Cucumbers that have gotten too big, lettuce and other greens and tomatoes that are not perfect for human consumption. They especially love the seeds in the tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelon.
Great article, I just use a 60 watt bulf for a few hours each night and close their door to the outside. A window is left open at the top about 2 inches for ventilation.
Hi all,
Bought these 4 birds in April. THought they were all hens but one turned out to be a big beautiful roo. Anyway, they have started to lay. They eggs are small and darker in color than my rhode island reds and other brown eggs, but not the deep chocolate brown I have seen on cuckoo...
OMG! a six foot snake. We only have little garters here in this part of NJ and I have not seen any this year. I am happy, about that; Mike, no I have not seen any evidence of hens eating the eggs. Best, ROb
Hi All,
Just want you to beware, for the last days I have found no eggs after work, with a flock of 12 good layers, 1 roo, and 4 too young to lay, no, just w eggs. Tomorrow comes a padlock..... The egg hysteria just watch out. Rob in NJ

Hi ALL,
just want to alert all to this. I live in central NJ. For the fifth day, no eggs. I have 17 hens and one roo. There are 4 to young to lay. But I had been getting 4 eggs per day after a very hot summer. Tomorrow a padlock goes on.....egg hysteria out there. The hens are secure, no...
Hi, Here is central NJ I use artificial light to extend the day 16-17 hours or so. That works well, eggs they keep laying. I also find that too much light, (keeping it on all night) really wears them out. They get stressed, loose feathers and stop laying. They need a rest, and a month of...
Hightstown, New Jersey. Have 16 hens and one roo. Just got 4 cuckoo maran pullets over the weekend. Just wondering , do they winter well in our climate? Anyone have experience with them? My others are RI Reds, Ameracaunas, and Orphingtons, which all do fine in our state.
I see some of you worry about the drafts, and I do too. But I always keep a window cracked, about an inch or so. I thought one should always have some ventilation in the hen house, even in cold months. Is this true? Thanks Rob in Central NJ>
My birds don't like snow much and usually stay in the coop when it snows. I use a heated galvanized base outdoors in winter, and in the hen house there is also a plastic waterer too, that is set up on a few cinder blocks, so the birds don't usually mess it up. That one is not usually frozen...
Can anyone tell me what blu kote is? I have a problem with a very docile rooster right now. I intend to separate him today, and have already put neosporin on his wounds. What is the purpose of the blu kote? Rob from NJ
I just wanted to report back to those who helped me with the soft shelled egg problem. My hens are doing much better. I include oyster shell at all times, cut down on the winter lighting, give a can of cat food every other day, and include a vitamin electrolyte supplement in the water. Seems...
Thank You Miss Prissy,
I will do just as you say. I will turn off the extended light, and give them additional protein, as well as separate oyster shell available at all times. I will let you know how it goes in two week. I appreciate your advice. Rob
Hi All, I have been reading past postings about soft shelled eggs, and most of what I see is that calcium is needed. I know my hens get enough calcium. I supplement their feed with crushed calcium and provide yogurt and cottage cheese at least once a week. However, for the past two to three...
I think I will just continue to be sensible, and feed a little milk or left over cottage cheese from time to time. I have not had any problems so far, and I think it helps supplement the calcium. Rob in central NJ
