Hi, my name is Grace and I am from Indiana . I am a new member of backyardchickens (as of 9/22/07) I wasn't really sure I wanted chickens at first but my mind changed quickly. My mom kind of persuaded me and then I really like the idea. My Dad still has mixed emotions on the chickens (like our...
I took a shovel and dug a little area and pulverized the soil really fine. Instant dust bath! It can bee seen from my kitchen window. I can watch them flopping around in it while I do the dishes! Who needs TV when you can watch chicken antics all day!!
I just noticed that my RIR roo's spurs have grown a lot. Do the spurs have quick in them like a toenail? Just wonder how careful I need to be when I trim them.
Google Henderson's chicken chart. It lists many breeds and their particular characteristic. Also keep in mind your local weather/climate. I have BRs, RIRs, SLWs, Delawares, and EEs. Ilike them all, but I LOVE my BRs!
My RIR is evil incarnate! I need to cull him but just haven't got the guts yet. This thread is interesting to me because I do love having a roo, but I wan't one that isn't so violent!!
Do you have a cat?? I have a cat that can catch anything! She came here as a stray kitten and decided to stay. She is 2 years old and, although small, will catch rabbits 1/2 her size and actually have to drag them. She also catches mice, moles, birds and anything else she can. She sits on...
I live in Indiana and we got our chickens last September 18th. I moved them to the coop at approx 8 weeks.
Orpingtons are cold hardy and should do fine. My only problem the whole winter was that my RIR roo got a little frostbite on one of his comb tips. That was in zero weather in February...
I would meet with my neighbors to discuss the issue. Kodiak's idea to contact adult children is a good one.
Has she threatened your children verbally? It sounds as if she may have been trying to scare them with her car. It sounds as if she could be picked up on an EDO (Emergency Detention...
I am going to make a sign next weekend and put it out and see if I can attract any local business. I won't have enough to sell daily. I am off 2 days per week, and will hang out my sign on those days. If I get a decent response, I will get more chicks for future egg sales.
I give away eggs...
We have 12 hens. I purchased a 4 nest nest box from Egg cartons.com and have 2 milk crates. They all want to use a certain milk crate. I have had a few random eggs in the nest boxes, but that is probably because someone was taking too long to lay her egg.
They remind me of a line of ladies...
Where EXACTLY do you purchase your "case of restraint"?? I think you should buy it wholesale, and sell it retail to a lot of BYCers! LOL How else could you resist those cute little fluffy, sweet, adorable, comical, little chickies at the feed store?
All I know about sexing chickens I learned on BYC. I believe the silkie that you think is a roo, is a roo, here's why-he has very turquoise ears. The second silkie needs a better side pic...but from the front, I would guess hen. Someone posted some really good sexing pics last week, but I...
I have 13 chickens, and in the winter, they are eating about 5-6 lbs of feed per day plus treats (scratch, rice, oatmeal), and a gallon of water or so.
I put 2 milk crates in for my girls. I plan on getting other nest boxes, but in the mean time, just in case they are precocious and decide to lay early (they are 18 weeks), I wanted something for them to nest in. How many boxes would be right for 12 hens?
