I have a RIR cockerel who I am thinking about breeding with my Light Sussex and Maran hens.
I think I will get Gingernut Rangers from the RIR x LS cross. But not so sure what I will get from the Marans cross. I have 2 cuckoo Marans and a copper Marans so would be two different types. I think the...

3 boys and a girl. The fox came and ate all but one boy just as she was POL
We were going to eat the boys but after that didn't have the heart to so kept him- still got him now. He's massive and a lovely cockerel. Had some interesting crosses from him. He's called Lucky Jim
Here's a...
Well, I had a nice surprise yesterday when I collected the eggs- not one but two blue eggs One from the mum and one from one of her daughters who I assumed must have started laying by now but hadn't. So I got a blue egg layer after all
Am very pleased!!
Edited to show pic (mum's blue egg...
That's brilliant thank you
The only thing is mine are large fowl not bantam. But the most info I've seen so far so that's excellent thanks. And it answers the question about the red feathering!
Thanks for all the replies everyone
Would be British standard as we're in England. Am crossing my fingers that the smaller ones don't end up with any red and that one of them is a cockerel!
Yes definitely mix your breeds- makes it more interesting to see the different personalities
As someone has said, it's really nice to have different egg colours when you collect them, so if you could get a blue egg layer, white egg layer, dark brown egg layer amongst them it makes for a really...
I just wondered if anyone knows where I can find a breed standard for Chocolate Orpingtons (LF)?
Or even just if they can be allowed to have some red feathering. I am trying to set up a breeding quartet. I have 3 pullets and a cockerel who are about 18 weeks old. The pullets are lovely and...
Update on the cockerel, he was looking completely cured this afternoon, I gave them a big pile of leaves and he was enjoying scratching around in it just as much as the others. Crossing my fingers whatever it was doesn't come back. Has anyone else had anything similar happen to their chickens?
Hello,
I'm hoping someone can suggest what might be wrong with my chickens from time to time.....
Last year I had a young Araucuna cockerel who suddenly stopped being able to walk, he went from fine to unable to walk over night. It was like he wanted to walk but he just couldn't get his legs...
That's a lovely bird in the picture. The chicks are that colour (except for the lighter one) so I'm glad 4/5 are the right colour
The eggs in the incubator have Rob Boyd bloodlines apparently. Don't know about the chicks. Both sets of eggs bought from different ebayer sellers at different ends...
I just wondered if anyone had any info, or knew what the most desired colour for a Chocolate Orpington is. (yes I know chocolate )
I bought some LF Choc Orp eggs off ebay, and have hatched 5 chicks which are now 5 weeks old. 4 of them are a dark brown colour. The 5th is a lovely lighter more...
Thanks so much for all the info, that's really interesting and makes sense now. Mystery rooster was funny looking brown chicken so totally different to the White Star rooster in looks.
I shall update when the other two start laying. I'm not sure I'll breed the hen again, I'm getting into...
Thanks for the info, that's really interesting. Thinking about it I seem to remember the ebay listing for the eggs I got the mum from said they laid a variety of pastel eggs- blue / green / pink. But they sent me all blue eggs and she lays blue eggs so I forgot. Oops.
The daughter is one of...
