I love our Welly!
She is strong but not a bully, curious and personable but not cuddly, alert and smart. One warning, I was told Welsummers are loud. Ours is loud in volume. Not necessarily chatty, but all alerts are much louder than the rest of my 20 something hens. If you need a quiet chicken...
McMurray has been amazing for me also. I have had wonderful luck w both hatcheries. McMurray has more breed options, so depending on what chicks I want is where I order from. Mt Healthy has better color specific variety but less breeds. Those are the two main differences I’ve experienced
Thank you. Ok good I’m glad the chicks will help w her having some status. We were just lazy integrating this year, normally I have them together much younger. I will be brooding the new chicks in the coop and run this fall to make it super easy to move them.
I have a group of hens aged 1-4 years old. In an parallel run with smaller coop I was housing eight 10 week old chicks, one cockerel and 7 pullets. We got home stuck out and got home shortly after dusk one night, and found 6 of the young pullets had been killed. Just one pullet and the cockerel...
Is it MTHFR mutation? Very common in women.
Yes. However pharmaceutical companies put synthetic folic acid in prenatal vitamins. Many women have issues and don’t attribute it to this. A great brand of supplement is Thorne. Another is pure encapsulations. They use “real” supplements and avoid...
I am hoping to do beans on Monday. Theres a bunch *almost* big enough to pick...so I pulled the ready ones and will store in the fridge, then do another picking early Monday morning and can whatever I have. Beans were late here in NY this year.
Not sure what type of diet or food restrictions you are on.
When I started my health journey, I went full vegan. It ended when I had extreme fatigue and was supplementing with more than I was eating daily.
I then became vegetarian, adding in seafood and eggs. Still felt like something was...
I use homemade oil of oregano when I start feeling sick. Also make my own fire cider for colds. Have some teas I drink when congested. Haven’t taken an allergy med or flu med in 2 years (because I haven’t needed it after taking what I make). There is a time & place for pharmaceuticals but I try...
Oh, one more thing. I think the time of year you order in NY can help mail chicks survival. We never order before the beginning of May. March & April are so unpredictable when it comes to cold snaps. Southern orders would probably be the opposite, but I make sure the weather is warm enough so...
Well, most big hatcheries have lots of chicks. McMurray from what i understand has multiple farms where they keep different flocks to collect eggs from. I’m sure there are smaller breeders you can order chicks from, but none of mine have looked sick, died early, or had any weird abnormalities...
I have been super happy w Murray McMurray (huge selection and easy to adjust orders when needed)
Also happy with Ideal Poultry (best value)
Mt Healthy is great also, especially for small orders. They are the priciest of the 3 and harder to reach customer service.
Same. DS is in high school. His friends had a heated debate over the best fast food place. He said he had only ever had McDonald’s and he was very small and didn’t remember it. The school has taken field trips where they stop at rest stops, and he will pack his own lunch if there isn’t a Panera...
I highly recommend McMurray hatchery. We’ve ordered hundreds of chicks from them over the years, and only ever ended up w 3 total accidental cockerels in all-pullet orders.
If you want a rainbow basket, friendly NY winter hardy birds, and many different patterns, here is what I suggest:
