If sex is determined by the hen and is already set when it is laid, how can temperature have anything to do with it? I was just saying if temps are a little high (or not ideal) that maybe only the roosters are surviving. I don't think temperature can actually CHANGE the sex of the chick. I'll...
I don't think the temperature is necessarily causing the chicks to be male. I do think that when the environment is not perfectly ideal the males are stronger and seem to survive before the females.
A friend of mine told me she has been setting only eggs with pointed ends and those are...
HA! Sorry. I havent' been on here in forever. I was trying to reply to a message someone posted about a rooster for sale that I had last year. Apparently I made a new post instead of replying to theirs.
Believe it or not I have an LGD (live stock guardian dog) and she is awesome. Well, she is more of a farm guard, she doesn't live with the birds and goats full time but she keeps an eye on everything. This one particular night I was getting my two little girls to sleep and my oldest daughter...
A pesky fox (I suspect) snatched one of my lovely pekins two nights ago after two years of no incidents :(. I decided to move my remaining duck (I am picking up a new mate for him today I hope that works out!) to my little goat pasture. It's a 125 ft x 50 ft enclosure with four pygmies. They...
Funny end to my story. I DID get another chick friend. Then I realized wait... Why doesn't mystery chick have a comb? What is that bump on its head? It's not an EE chick it's a flipping orphaned wild turkey I found in my yard! Lol I gave my actual chicken chick to a broody hen who is very...
Hot water bottle is a great idea! I did try a bear and he/she didn't care for it. I found someone near by with day old chicks. I think the best solution for me is to just get a buddy. Poor thing. Thanks everyone for your help! I'm still baffled about how this little thing hatched but oh...
Yes I agree raw is the best for so many reasons. Fortunately there is a place close by here that sells it. It is expensive though. I'm going to try goat milk this fall when my goat kids. Not sure that I'll like it but my little girl LOVES goat milk. Go figure!
I just got two goats and plan to try milking. They are a lot of fun.. On another note.... I went outside today to find my cat chasing this what appears to be day old chick. I saved it. Looks like an EE which I have EE hens.. I can't figure out where it came from. I'm not missing any hens, no...
I just want up say last time I let a broody try to hatch eggs everything went wrong. My hen got locked out of her nest, the nest got soaked with water... The eggs didn't make it. I have two other broodys about a week in and everything seems fine. Today I go outside and my cat is chasing an...
True.
true. I also have a friend getting ready to place a hatchery order. We will see. They r just mixed bantam eggs I just really wanted to see what they were going to look like. I have a frizzle rooster. There is real 'cute' potential. :). So day ten u think to look for movement?
They are all her eggs but I have plenty of other fertile eggs here. I might candle for movement in a day or so before I start over. I'll post what I find. (sigh). Depressing. Hopefully it's good news I hate throwing out eggs.
Ok age old hatching question my friends! My broody was locked out of her nest today while I was at work. It's a dog crate to keep her safe at night. At some point my duck went in and laid while my broody was out eating and the door must have shut behind her when she left. These eggs are on...
Oh hatching friends I have an age old question. My broody was kicked off her nest while I was at work today. She's nearly a week into the process. She was locked out and it could have been up to five hours. She's back on the nest now. Think there is any chance those eggs will make it? It...

I apologize for repeating if someone has already posted this link.
I believe the necropsy includes toxicology as well.
Yes my vet contacted purdue for me and they were able to do the necropsy at no charge. I did end up spending about $100 at the vet for the visit which included exam, Xrays, and ultimately euthanasia. I'm not sure why they gave me this deal, but my vet handled all of it. Euthanized the poor...
Sally - what age are you going to put them outside? I've never had chicks this time of year.
My duckling has tripled in size I think in a week and a half. I wonder when I can safely put him out in the yard....
Why did it have to get so cold!!
