I found out what the problem is with my hen. When I was getting food out for the chickens I noticed that there were moldy clumps in it. For the last week and a half I have been having breathing problems after feeding the chickens. I never put it together until that moment. I have done some...
I have a pullet that has had a rough couple of weeks. First she got a beak injury and lost the front tip of her upper beak. Shortly after that she started wheezing and seeming like she has lost her voice. When I picked her upside down to make sure she didn't have something stuck in her throat...
2 weeks ago we put all the birds into a new coop. On the second night one of the pullets had an abrasion to the beak like it got stuck on something and peeled. It only affected the top of the beak near the end. During the same time she appeared to have a problem with her crop being abnormally...
One of my two babies was a bit weak. I decided to give them some powerade mixed with water. The little one is up and running like crazy. Not sure if that is recommended but it worked like a charm. I was afraid I would lose it.
I ended up with only 2 babies out of 30 eggs. The rest were infertile. None had any development whatsoever. I think the post office scrambled the eggs real good! The babies I hatched are a splash and a black orpington. The black one is having a problem where it walks normal and then falls...
I am wondering if this is the start of spraddle leg. it seems to walk normal some times and sit on the back of its leg and move that way. Should I get out some bandaids or is it too soon?
Thank you for the reply. I just used the paper because I was getting BAGS and bags of shredded paper from work so I figured what the heck. I will look into the rice hulls. Are those similar to buckwheat? Thanks again!
I have 2 BBS Orpington babies so far. They appear that one is black, and the other is splash! I would be so happy if that was the case, all my other orpingtons from the same seller have been blue. I love furry babies
I am not sure if one of my hens ate a ton last night. She has an impacted crop this morning but it may be a coincidence, she just spent one night in the new coop. I massaged the crop and it feels better. Hopefully it was not from the paper!
Thank you for that info. I massaged her crop and rechecked it, she is now walking around and the crop feels a bit smaller. I tell you, this is like raising children all over again, except the children come out walking.
She seems to be unable to eat. She was fine last night. Her crop felt a bit big, maybe it is something else. She went into a new coop last night and I used shredded paper for bedding. I was afraid they may try and eat it but I don't know that they did or didn't. I am new to all of this. I...
I am trying to find an environmentally friendly coop bedding that I could compost easily. Would shredded paper be okay? Some were pecking at it in the morning like they may be trying to eat it so I got them all out. Now I am worrying. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
One of my hens looked ill this morning. I put them into their coop last night for the first time. Before that they were underneath. She appears to have injured her beak, it looks like the top layer was peeled off. Should I medicate her. I am really concerned.
Today is to be hatch day, no pips. Then to top it off the power went out for 1 hour The temp in the brinsea dropped to 95 and the temp in the hovabator dropped to 90 degrees. I am starting to think this hatch may be a bust.
Is this crazy, or just nuts...We decided spur of the moment to use or passes to get in free to Walt Disney World. I will have new hatchlings a week or so old. I will need to train my father in law about chicken baby husbandry. Am I nuts or just crazy? The tickets expire in a few weeks, kids...
I am on day 19 of my hatch. I still have 25 BBS Orpington eggs going strong. I had to split them into 2 bators because the Octo 20 does not really handle even 24 orpington eggs. I can't wait to see what I get!
