    Listless chick

I have a hen hatched clutch of chicks, origially 5, that are two weeks old and have been having babies slowly die. They are (well had been until two days ago) been free ranging and I have the first two die off within the first week. One without me seeing and the other acting like it couldn't see...

    Heat lamp?

I have 16 three and four week old chicks that I am moving to their little "grower" coop. They have had a heat lamp available, but it won't reach as far as the new coop. It is closed on all four sides with a large window on the south side and we are in South Central Texas where weather is dipping...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

She took them and all are doing well :) She is a conchin x white leghorn. The only full conchin I had was a roo (and terribly aggressive), but these crosses have been excellent broodies and Mommas!

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My incubator chicks hatched yesterday an this morning, the broodies hatched last Saturday. She has 3 and I had 5 hatch out. She is in a coop by herself with no outside interference from the rest of the flock and the coop is roughly 5x8'. It has been very warm here reaching the mid 90's (central...

    Rescued abandoned egg

So I candled the eggs again last night (tomorrow is lock down) and it looks like I have roughly half that are wuitters between candling at day 7 and yesterday :/ Could some of that be due to high humidity levels? There is no odor so I will leave them for now just in case, but they were all...

    Rescued abandoned egg

I mainly want one because I am gone for 10+ hours a day during the week and I don't feel like the turing I am able to do is sufficient considering the literature that I have read

    Rescued abandoned egg

Okay cool! They are already in a cut down carton set on a piece of 1/2" conduit for "turning" purposes. It would be pretty easy to just take the conduit out from underneath it. Eventually I'll get an automatic turner...;)

    Rescued abandoned egg

Compared to the article you linked, I think my air cells are a little small. Momma has taken the chick back well so far so I have pulled as much water out of the well that I can and I think I am just going to let it run dry (as long as it stays above 25%) until lock down on Thursday. Do you...

    Rescued abandoned egg

Well it made it! Hatch between 12:30 and 1:00am (my little was sick...). Was pretty amazing to get to watch :) It's moving around and mostly dried off. I am going to try and put it back with Momma while it's still dark.

    Rescued abandoned egg

I have been impressed with this one so far. The digital thermo/hygrometer I have in there keeps high and low records fr a 24 hour period and it has been very consistent even with fairly wide swings in temp in my house (central Texas during "fall" lol). I think it will be well worth the...

    Rescued abandoned egg

Thanks for the info! My bator is the Genesis hovabator with a digital thermostate and hygrometer, but I have found that it's hygrometer seems to be roughly 7 points lower than my digital and analog hygrometer that are both in the bator at egg level. I doubt that I will be buying eggs to hatch...

    Rescued abandoned egg

It has been around 40-55% most of the time per the incubator instructions. I thought that sounded high, but it's my first hatch so I was gunna see how it went. They are not "bought" eggs so it's not a great loss if there is a poor hatch rate. They (the actual incubator eggs) are at 15 days...

    Rescued abandoned egg

I have a broody hen that hatched out 2 of the four eggs she was given. I collected the other two and pht them in the incubator (already running for a different hatch) and candled them this morning. One is not as far along as the other, but still moving (I only gave her three...someone was...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

So probably a silly question, but what the heck. I have a broody who is due to hatch on Saturday (unproven, but third generation from very good mothers), and 11 eggs in the incubator due to hatch the following Saturday. Think there is any hope of the broody hen accepting chicks a week younger...

    Broody Hen Thread!

My broody (first timer) moved off of the three eggs I gave her at some point yesterday and relocated to another nest :/ I found them around 8pm, but it was 95F here yesterday and it stays pretty warm in the little house. I poked them back under her and today have blocked off access to the other...

    Young rooster questions

Lol, yes, I will be culling some probably late this fall and adding some chicks in the Spring and likely another up and coming roo, but I would prefer him to be the sire of the next generation of hatchlings :) Thanks for the help!

    Young rooster questions

I have a 7 month old EE who has just been promoted (by me) to head of my 25 bird flock. I butchered the previous rooster this morning because he was quite prejudice on only mating my red hens and was pulling out their feathers, not to mention he was fathered by a particularly aggressive roo and...

    Confused broody

I have a 6 month-old leghorn x cochin pullet that has gone broodie, or at least is behaving like other broodies I have had; sitting in the same nest all day, stopped laying and acting protective of the nest. However, she refuses to sit on any eggs...I hae dumped er from her nest, placed some...

    Broody leghorn...?!?

Awe! Adorable!! Mine gave up-the other hens kept adding to her nest and she would randomly start eating an egg or two (never had that issue previously). Almost like she was hungry but didn't want to leave the nest...she's an odd one. I moved her to try and keep the other bords from laying in her...
