Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

HI I am going to follow along! It is my darling turkey that went broody so now I can join the 'club'. I was worrying about the clutch of eggs getting to cold the other night but low and behold went I knelt down to look in the dog house there was my BR hen doing her thing- good thing too...

    viability of eggs

Does anyone know if turkey eggs I found would be okay to try to hatch if they have been exposed to temps down to 40 degrees? There are 10 eggs in the nest, and I have 3 hens so they shouldn't be more than a few days old.

    meat ducks -- breed suggestions?

For those of you that have replied about Swedes. Not to jack your thread OP but more info is great. I have four Swede drakes that have to go. I am wondering if 10 months old is too old to butcher. I really like them so if they are no longer good eating I will rehome them. They look like they...

    Christmas is in the cooler!

We did ours over the fire in a trash can. I had help to pluck but it went way faster then the broilers. I got started right off with stripping the wing tips and tail of the big feathers and my neighbor worked on the body. Took no more than 5 mins. Very few dark pins on the BR. We did two...

    Christmas is in the cooler!

Congrats! We only raised 3 for butcher this year, being new to turkeys but WOW! They are amazing, we did BR and they made nice 15lb roasting birds. I love Turkeys, they are really tasty and fun. WTG!

It seems we all have the fever!

My hen that went broody hasn't budged, I am really tempted to stick a couple of the unhatched eggs under her. Jaerhons are not really supposed go broody from what I understand, what is happening around here?

It seems we all have the fever!

Tonight when I went out to close up the coop one of my Jaerhon hens was all puffed up in the nest box. Kind of ironic because I just had our first few eggs hatch in the incubator. Not that either of us have our timing right or that she will stay serious. I just thought it was cute since not a...

Tell me something GOOD that happened to you today.

The first generation of Christenstad (DBF and I's combined last name) Norwegian Jaerhon's were born today. I have never hatched chicks before and I am so proud. We are on way to our little slice of Scandinavia!

ooh my humidity is at 78%!

Thanks for the reassurance. I will have a few eggs that may hatch a little later (couldn't resist popping a couple more eggs in) than the rest but my humidity was low the whole rest of the time. I do have the vent open now but I will close it once I am more around 75%. It did drop a touch...

ooh my humidity is at 78%!

I am mid hatch they started yesterday around 11 am and I have four so far and a few with external pips. I had to open the incubator to help a chick that was tangled in some strands of fleece, so I took super hot tap water and poured about a cup in the water dish. Maybe it will level out, but...

ooh my humidity is at 78%!

It seems bad, how could it go up so high when I have been opening the 'bator? I will open the vent hole and check in a minute. The relative humidity is higher today so it is easier to get it up there I guess.

    Day 25 what next

I just read that another BYCer listens for a heartbeat with a stethoscope. If you opened a healthy live chick by accident you would feel bad. I would probably open any that didn't have a heartbeat/ movement. That way you would know what to do for the ones that were still alive, maybe?

This is the hardest time for me

I am going to have to move mine because of the poor decision I made with the putting something under the eggs. I don't want to but the one that had it's leg tangled still has fiber around it's knee and looks exhausted from struggling. I am sure it will die if I don't get it dried off and free...

Can't wait to start hatching soon! Anyone else with 10/14 hatch day?

Congratulations to everyone that is hatching and best wishes to those that are about to! I am having so much fun with this. I have never had my very own chicks before. Our ducks did it on their own and that was really neat but this is way cooler. I just put my boys on the school bus and my 7...

Can't wait to start hatching soon! Anyone else with 10/14 hatch day?

I can't take pictures until I get batteries for my camera! I am at two NJ's now. They seem to be hatching quickly when they decide to.

Can't wait to start hatching soon! Anyone else with 10/14 hatch day?

I already caved! I had to look, I am so glad I did the little darling was sitting in the water pan! Sopping wet but really busy and alert. When I reached in to get the water pan out she jumped up and scrambled across the other eggs! Looks like a little girl! This is fun! It looks like she...

Can't wait to start hatching soon! Anyone else with 10/14 hatch day?

Mine are peeping! I can hear it when I am near by. Trying ever so hard to not peek, it is so hard. I really need to build a periscope so I can see in and all around though the vent hole. I guess my temp was alright since they are hatching on time. That is a big relief especially since this...

    SWEDISH Duck Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love them to! Mine are not good examples but they are still fun and one day I will get some good breeding stock. I am going for a Scandinavian theme to my farm and want to be able to breed nice examples so I am not flooding the world with mutts. I only got drakes from my hens this year so...
