I have mine for my 2nd grade classroom and I keep them in a dish tub with no cover...obviously away from the chicks, though...Your story made me LOL
It is really easy to keep and as long as you keep them hydrated with an apple/potato, etc they reproduce like mad. I feed my 24 chickens and a...
It seems the egg collector went on strike and so my chickens went broody. I have 8 hens and 1 rooster in that coop. They are Orpingtons and mixed Orp/EEs. The broodies are two Orpingtons & 1 mix (The two Orps are my sweetest most tame girls) The coop is basically a large shed up on blocks...
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
One Buff Orpington hen age apprx 2 yrs, one Buff/americauna mix rooster--same age (same father).
Seemed perfectly healthy the day before each death.
2) What is the behavior, exactly...
We finally got our chicks! We have 3 silkies from Bobbi Porto and 2 Orpingtons from a backyard breeder. One Orpington is showing signs of being a roo.
Silkies .. Here they are:
1. Splash hatched 10/5/09--We've lately been calling it Snowy and Hedwig (after Harry Potter's Owl)...
Welcome to our page!
We are just starting out with chickens. We built our coop Summer 09 and after buying EEs at a feed store, Orpingtons from a backyard breeder and 3 Silkies from Bobbi Porto- our flock is complete. This first page has the EEs. Click on the Silkie page to see our Silkies...
I saw a gradual decline, but it was only over a week..the first time it happened. First his head wasn't as upright..and then slowly he got worse until he seemed to think that his neck stretching under his belly was upright.
When he got it again, it was sudden.
My 3 month old EE/Orpington mix has what looks like a small piece of his insides popping out of his vent. We applied Preparation H and have pushed it in a couple times. Is there anything else we can do? Has anyone had this happen to a boy? I was only able to find hens with prolapsed vents...
My Rooster, who is now 9 months old is in his 2nd bout with Wry Neck. Last time, he was pecked badly by my EEs and got really bad before we knew what was wrong. we gave him the vitamin treatments plus prednisone and he got better. This time we think he may have hit his head in their new condo...
I followed Alan Stanford's treatment on my 8 month old silkie and he recovered fully, but it took 2 weeks to see ANY results and 1 month for him to recover fully---but he did recover!
We also made a sling for him so he wouldn't hurt himself flipping over.
Good luck!
My silkie Jazz had crookneck. He was pecked by my EEs out in the yard and it took about a week before he started showing symptoms...first just a crook in his neck, then he started folding up sometimes, then almost permanently flopping his neck under his body until he rolled over.
For a month...
I have a chick whose crop is on the left of his body. He's just backwards, I guess. He has other issues, neck cocked to the side, sometimes only using one eye. He was probably not formed all the way during incubation. He's 8 weeks now and has an enlarged/impacted and sour crop. I am...
I can't make the swap, but If anyone in the area has an Araucana or Ameraucana young rooster or pair they are looking to sell, we're interested. My husband wants to breed back in the blue egg gene with our one EE who lays bluish green. I'm in the Tampa area. If this was just a little bit...
They all had a Buff Orpington daddy The EEs have very little coloring coming through from their mom who is blue with some buffish penciling, I think you can see her in the background of one of the pictures (Lucky's)
Anyone?
We have a flock of pure Orpingtons and Orpington/EE mixes (all the same daddy Orpington)..
The babies hatched the first week of May and are now about 5.5 weeks. I wanted to see if anyone wanted to start guessing. Only 2 are standing out as boys due to behavior and none of them are really...
Mine are two weeks and they fly out of our rabbit hutch! It opens from the top to clean and while I'm spot cleaning and/or feeding them they try to flutter out...and 2-3 of them have landing on the sides! It's amazing because I've never seen their adult counterparts fly that high for their...
We finally let our little babies out of the brooder this weekend in two groups. They are two weeks old. We brought out the EE/Orpington mixes:
They settled down and flew all over the place after an initial shock of the wide world!
Then we brought out the Orpington Chicks:
They were more...
I'm not sure it's wry neck, but it can't hurt to treat for it, in case that's what it is--it's just a vitamin course, albeit a tough one to administer.
Did you notice anything about him prior to this happening? My silkie had been attacked a week or two before he ended up with full blown wry...
Jazz is now almost brand new! We followed the meds course...vitamin E, B, selenium and prednisone... He lived inside being hand fed and watered several times a day and we created a box that he could step down on the ground, but couldn't flip himself over or get his neck under his belly in...
Sorry no one responded to you. I have a similar situation. My silkie has wry neck and we kept him in the house on meds for almost 4 weeks and now he no longer tucks his head down, it's still slightly bent though. He's still taking meds but I put him back in two days ago with his 2 roomies...
