Had to put something over George today. Another hen was on her nest laying an egg and she was kicked onto another nest. I gave her her eggs and put a wire cage over her. I just hope she wasn't off her eggs too long. @-@
Within the past month I've had THREE hens go broody (All half-siblings too!) and some general advice would be nice. Our first broody (A nasty, bad mother) abandoned her chicks(Joshua, a likely rooster, and Sho) a bit early, but they integrated to the flock pretty well after we got rid of the...
That would be pithing from what I've heard here. I've heard people on BYC say it's a humane death and that yes, it does kill them. Can't speak from experience though.
When the Cornish Xs were young two of them got attacked be another chicken. Both got a neck injury and one got a wing injury. They've since healed and are now 8 weeks old, but since it was injured the one with the wing and neck injury has kept it's neck pressed against his body with his head...
Sorry for the late update guys! I'll post some pictures of them tomorrow.
The hens: George, Fred(Sadly she died. :( ), Gizzmo,Scorpius and Darek.
The roosters: Teddy. Darek. Ariya and Percy.
Thanks guys. Fred was one of the family favourites and it was hard to lose her.
We do have a few 4 week old chicks in a brooder from when the Buff Orpington went broody (again), but they turned out to be Cornish Xs so we need to figure out what to do with them. :/
Today I had to put down my EE Fred. She was a really sweet chicken but she managed to get herself stuck behind the coop and stabbed her leg with some wire. It looked fine at first but it bled a lot and the wound was deep. Her leg ended up swelling a lot and although it eventually went down her...
This is what I could make, at least for now. The sling's a bit low, but it keeps her weight off of her bad leg. She keeps trying and failing to escape before noticing the feed and eating.
Her new sling:
Okay , I brought Fred inside since I found another room to move the injured chicks. Fred is where I can check on her the most.
I plan on trying to make the sling- are there any posts you could suggest that could help, or any other BYCers I could talk to?
Thanks a bunch.
Fred in her cage:
She's gotten worse now. Around her wound is green and her joint has swollen to three times it's proper side.
This is her healthy leg:
This is her injured leg:
She squawks a lot if you try to touch it too. At this point I'm thinking it might be kinder just to put her down.
I've been on this board way too much the past few days.
After two badly injured chicks, a seemingly sick hen who suddenly stopped having any symptoms and now a 15 week old pullet with a puncture wound...
My chicken Fred managed to get herself stuck behind the feed storage shed and made a big...
The thing is she isn't making the noise anymore and is acting normally- no more sound, no sneezing, no coughing. Is it possible she could have gotten water in her lung or something? She ate well and drank he water like normal.
I have a 2 1/2 year old production/polish cross chicken that is sounding strange when she breathes. When she breathes out, and sometimes in, she makes a "brrr" noise, similar to a trolling chicken, but it doesn't seem normal. When she makes this noise and sometimes when she isn't she breathes...
Another thing I forgot to mention: on the chicken with the injured wing on the same side of her face her eyelid is a bit droopy. Her other is is normal and round, but on that side it looks almond shaped .
I have two injured three week old chicks. They, their two siblings, and their broody Trudy have been in the flock for a week. Today I went down to find two bloodied up chicks.
The first has a large peck to its neck down to the muscle. It has a flap of skin hanging on by about four millimetres...
I have a barred rock hen of just over a year old. She used to be friendly, but she's turned really nasty recently, although I guess that's besides the point.
A few days ago I had picked her up and held her upside down between my knees as she had a mild case of bumble foot and I was checking on...
