    Lockdown question

So I'm hatching eggs in my daughters classroom, our hatch date is April 12th so that would make April 9th (Saturday) day 18 and time to remove the egg turner and lockdown the incubator. Unfortunately her school is closed and locked on the weekends. How bad would it be if I started the lockdown...

First run in with a hawk

Thanks sometimes you just need a little reassurance lol. I'm assuming its normal for her to be extremely docile and just sort of sitting still after an event like this. Shock I'm assuming.

First run in with a hawk

I let the 12 chickens out today to roam and do what chickens do, it's 55 today and sunny something we haven't seen for months. I hear some loud noises and look out to see a red tail on top of my SLW, I instinctively removed my shoe and threw it at the hawk scaring it off. Chicken laid on ube...

    Possible dilemma

So today I notice my biggest hen a buff Orpington has the same feathers missing as the favaucana. Same reddish wound area just not as large. What cos be going on? I checked all my other birds and they're fine, I just went out and inspected the coop for mites and nothing I could see. Could these...

    Possible dilemma

The cut is more dried blood than anything I think. Unless you think it looks infected? I used Veterycin to clean it and dried her off then sprayed it with Blu Kote

    Possible dilemma

Ok so she pooped and everything's back to normal. I'm assuming either a prolapsed vent or that's just what it looks like when a chicken poops (never really paid close attention to that lol).

    Possible dilemma

So I brought her in to clean her up and get some antiseptic spray on her and here's what I found. What's going on?

    Possible dilemma

First pic is the coop with roosts. I've never seen any excess feathers in the coop just the run. The second pic is the run. I believe I've found the aggressor, one of the RIR. While the Favaucana was laying the one RIR came in and pecked her out of the nest box.

    Possible dilemma

She's the same age as the GLW and the SLW. The others are 3 months older then that group. I'll try to get pics of the roost bars and her injury.

    Possible dilemma

I have an 8 month old blue favaucana that's a little smaller then the rest of the flock consisting of 2 Buff orps, 2 black australorps, 1 barred rock, 1 blue copper maran, 2 RIR, 2 GLW and 1 SLW. I noticed some feathers in the run yesterday but inspected everyone and they looked fine. They spend...

    Connecticut!

How's everyone doing so far this winter? What are your plans for the upcoming single digit weather? Here in Bethel they're calling for -5 Monday night and then single digits at night low teens during the day rest of the week. I just bought a cozy-heaters 400 watt panel heater just in case. Not...

What time do chickens lay eggs?

I always assumed it was in the morning but my australorp just started laying and she lays an egg everyday around 5/6 PM. Is that normal? Was I totally wrong in thinking chickens laid eggs only in the morning?

    Cracked beak

Now like I said it's not cracked through the beak, say top to bottom. It's like the top layer cracked off. It's hard to explain.

I'm unable to get a pic right now. She was eating and pecking

    Cracked beak

So my 18 week old buff Orpington got spooked in the run and jumped into the hardware cloth. I then noticed that her beak had a little blood on it so I picked her up to inspect. I saw that what looks to me to be a "top layer" of the beak if that makes sense, cracked and raised up off the beak...
