I have a bantam Cochin sitting on 5-6 eggs for 23 days now, and I am wondering if I can lift her up to look at the eggs. I just want to check for pipping or cracks and general inspection. I know not to move the eggs much just want to get a glimpse so I can prepare my 4 year old daughter if we...
I was also thinking of some vining squash (something very prolific) that the base are is covered with chicken wire to protect it. That way it could get established but the ladies could eat the rest as it grows out. I am guessing that it would get plenty of fertilizer so it would try and keep...
Any body have suggestions for plants that we could plant inside the run to attract bug and make it look nicer but that the chickens won't eat. We could fence them off till they get good and established. I was think knock out roses should work.
Half the birds are 2 and the other half are 1. There are feathers in the coop but not a ton. I know they are or did moly because they replaced the saddle feathers from when we had a rooster at te beginning of the summer.
I just thought it was odd that they all do it at the same time.
So for the past few weeks egg production has completely dropped off to the point that there aren't any. I have 6 birds and haven't gotten eggs in weeks. I am thinking something is getting them any ideas what could be getting them? It would have to be small enough to leave the chickens alone but...
So it is day 19 or 20 and when I checked mon my girl today she is not sitting on the eggs but is actually next to them. Granted it is 85 outside and a bit hotter inside the coop. Any thing to worry about?
So this is the first year we are only using our eggs for Turkey day and we are having a hard time peeling them. Have you guys noticed that they want to stick to the egg more?
Any ways Happy Turkey Day!!
We are in central Texas and have about 15 birds that need to go in the freezer. Anyone know of a place to take them to be processed? I don't have a plucker or a scalding pot so 15 is a lot to pluck.
We make chicken spaghetti, king ranch casserole, or some other dish like that with our older birds. Yes they are tougher but I normally put them in a pot for 4 hours or so cool and then shred. Shred will help take out the stringiness.
I have two flocks really the older established flock is 2 RIR roosters and 2 hens. We are about to cull the two roosters. They were necessary when we had 10 hens but now we are down to just 2.
We also have 35 or so 9 week old chicks. A bunch of different varieties. 9 are dark Cornish...
Well two chicks gone :( got back from errands and two were half gone. One missing a leg and the other looked like it had been halved. What is weird is they were in the pen with the rest of the young ones. I opened it up this morning before I left 10 am and got home 3:30 and found them...
After a little searching I found the site where they ate the EE. Nothing but feathers and wings. From the predator list looks like a cat of some kind. That's not good cause cats are really hard to catch in traps.
One was a Minorca and the other EE. Both were some time after 6 pm but before 10 pm. I saw both yesterday around 6 while doing things in the yard. I only saw EE around the coop and saw where it went through the fence. It took the bird over the bottom strand of barbed wire?? This is 8-12" off the...
