..In the Beginning...
My son said he would like to have some chickens. We live on a horse farm and have the space...we just need to build a coop(which you can read about on our Bayou Chicken House Page). SO we start off on researching primarly through BYC and by visiting friends who also own...

This coop does not come with sketched out design plans...but hopefully what you can glean from it is some ideas of how to repurpose found items creatively to make a functional coop. As soon as I priced hardware cloth...I...

There is a playset coop in the Coop Pages, and I believe it's in the Medium Sized section. They had a clubhouse on top- and built that into the coop itself and then got really creative with the rest of it. It won an award over the summer. I'll try to hunt down the link, but it's easy...
I am sooo glad I read through this thread and looked at the pictures...I got some great wreath ideas and who knew there were solar Christmas lights?! I'll be making a trip to Target later today!
I am more interested in the swing and slide type playsets rather than A-frame swingsets that have been converted to coops. We have one that has one swing...an overhang with a climbing rope...and three levels in additon to the slide(and it had the canvas tent over the top. I have an idea about...
mine have loved the pumpkins! Nobidy is selling anymore here...apparantly some pig farmer goes and buys all the leftover ones after Halloween from the suppliers around here....but next year I will buy more to decorate with now that I know they will do double duty after halloween!
If we purchased our hens as young chicks in March/April 2011...when can we expect their first molt? Is it very obvious that they are molting???for instance, do they lose so many feathers that it is noticeable? The reason I ask is because we have several that have similar feathers and it is...
We purchased a lot of pumpkins this year for decorative purposes...my son has made one into a jack-o-lantern...and we roasted the seeds for ourselves. If we open up the rest of the pumpkins...would the chickens be interested in the pumpkin guts and seeds? Has anyone fed pumpkin to their...
We are planning on adding some type of pvc pipe feeder to our coop...but I would like to paint the white plastic green to match the design with some type of plastic=friendly paint. Has anyone painted pvc before and if so, how did the paint hold up to little chicken beaks??
We have a couple of Polish(right now I think we have 2 roos and 2 hens...(but it may be 1 roo and 3 hens) all hatched in Spring of 2011 that we would like to separate from the rest of our flock for breeding purposes. We are considering just adding on a wing to the current coop and a long narrow...
We are in NW Louisiana...not really even Fall yet...ut we have had a couple of exceptionally cool nights...we were 95 degrees a couple of weeks ago and have gone down to upper 30's twice in past week. We added artificial light in coop last Friday so they are getting at least 14 good hours of...
We have several hens and our Golden Laced Polish started laying white eggs about every other day when she was about 22 weeks old. At the same time our 2 Golden Comet hens started laying nice brown eggs daily(they were the same age). Recently...our Easter eggers have been laying pink and green...
I have tried to read through this thread and get my answer..but I am not sure.
I have a Plymouth Barred Rock roo.. and two production red pullets(I am not sure of the exact breed...been told RIR or production red)..but they were purchased at a Tractor Supply and began laying ant 19 weeks. Would...
