I have never de-beaked or trimmed my chickens' toes. I do have a very large gravel drive way which they cross over each morning to get to the other side. I think this might be the main cause. But, as I said, I have only had one case in four years that has ended up serious.
I have been having some problems with Bumble Foot in my flock, and was wondering what causes it, and more importantly, what I can do to stop it. I just got done with operating on one of me leghorns that had it, from which she is recovering now, and decided to take a look out in the coop to see...
Alright, thank you everyone! I think I will want to get guineas, with all the befits they bring. I am so busy with new projects with my chickens, it will probably be next year before I get around to getting into these guys. As far as getting some, though, I was looking on some of the hatchery...
Thank you so much! I think that is what I will do -separate coops and free ranging together. I free range my chickens on five acres, and they are very happy. I would never do anything but that, seeing the joy it gives them. Will I have any problems with them occasionally roosting in the chicken...
I have had some problems with hawks concerning my present flock of 41 chickens, and have also had some problems with ticks, weeds and Japanese beetles. My main concern, though was my hawk problem. I did some researching online, and saw that Guineas would not only ward off hawks, but would also...
I looked on the bottom of the foot, and I didn't really see anything there. She is out foraging around right now, would be impossible to catch her. I will post a picture of the bottom of her foot tonight when I can catch her in the coop.
Thanks!
I have a leghorn hen that has had a little bit of swelling going on in her right foot for about a month now, and in the past few days it has gotten worse. At first I thought it would go away with time, but it hasn't.
She is a little over a year old, and is very healthy and active. She still...
I have read in Backyard Poultry that some guy feeds whole oats to his chickens once daily in the morning, then sends them out to forage. He says oats give them great protien, and don't make them fat. I'm looking into this, though I am not sure how I would grow my own oats, or have enough in...
This is what I do for my chicks when they are uneasy and need a bit of a boost, but you can add a teaspoon of sugar per gallon of his water, and he should perk up a little. If you need vitamins, I know spinach is great in many different ones, K especially. Another one that would be good for him...
Hi there, I have an Ameraucana pullet that has had a bit of swelling going on in the corner of the fleshy part of her eye for a bit of time now. It has recently gotten worse and has increased in size. It is not scabby, nor very hard to the touch. I have been reading up on this, and it does not...
I have a leghorn and a Ameraucana hen that have swollen foot joints. My leghorn's is on the ball of her foot, on my Ameraucana, it is on one of her toe joints. I touch them and they don't seem to be in too much pain, but as it has been getting bigger on my leghorn, she has been trying to stay...
I am almost positive it is not my rooster. I have one large delaware rooster that looks over all 34 hens. When he mounts, he grabs the neck or head feathers. He is so large he hardly has to make too much contact with the hens when he does do his thing.
Any other possibilities?
Hey there, I have been noticing that throughout this year I have been having more hens than usual missing feathers for longer than usual on their back. I have thought this was because of a serious mite problem, but sure my chickens have a mite or two, but being completely free-ranged, mites have...
Hello. Up for sale is a nice Silkie rooster. He was hatched directly from Jerry Schexnayder and is a product of a white show girl male and a paint silkie hen. He is pretty friendly, I just don;t have the space or time for him.
