We do not 'debate' on the BYC forum.
As someone who has raised chickens for many many years, debeaking is cruel. It is a deformity that never corrects itself and you have to accomodate a chicken that can no longer eat normally nor scavange and forage properly for extra...
I agree on the organic route. The more I get into this chicken thing the more I am realizing why biggers farmers do what they do, becuase it works. I would love to have all natural everything, but it is simply not practical.
After this incident I would love to debate someone on de-beaking...
I live in ND. Last week it was -40 F WITHOUT wind chill factor. If chickens can freeze to death, I have not seen it yet. My coop keeps them typically 30 degrees warmer than outside air, and keeps draft off of them. But that was still -10 F. Keep them fed, and closed up and you should be...
A little rant on pine tar. It almost cost 4 of my birds their lives......
Had some picking problems when I tried to combine 3.5 month old Ameraucanas with full grown RIR and BRs. Tried again and took the time to smear the buts and entire hind quaters of 25 birds with pine tar after hearing...
Yeah I sent the pics to Ideal and they didn't offer any refunds or anything. I'm not going to push it. As long as they give me my blue/green eggs I'll be happy.
I have 25 Ameraucanu/Eastereggers from Ideal poultry and have realized as they are getting older that they all have curves toes. Is this standard for this breed?
Yeah the only problem is I am at work today and the wife went out this morning and has informed me she will not be leaving the house again today.......... Something about almost freezing her face off...
I have three 250 watt bulbs. Mostly to keep the water from freezing, however my wife just called me and said it is frozen anyway....... My coop is 18 X 26, so it is a little bigger. Its just toooo COLD!!!
Well I am in ND and we have had wind chill temperatures of -50 F over the last few days. Regular temps of -20 F. I have found out what happens to eggs when they freeze. They basically bust right open. I'll post pics tomorrow. Hopefully this doesn't last long........
All the chickens look...
Where are you at in ND? We just moved back from the city as well. We were in Dallas for 9 years. Now we live in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, nice to see some ND people here, this is a very helpful site.
wow, I read that Plamodan's direction on washing eggs.......talk about making something complicated!! Wipe the "stuff" off and put 'em in the fridge. Done.
When can I put my Ameraucana chicks in with my adult chickens and not have problems? Now they are about 2 months old and quickly outgrowing their space, so I'd like to put them in with the others in the main coop, but don't want dead birds......ideas???
Hello,
I have 46 hens and they are 5.5 months old. As of a week and a half ago I am getting about 6-7 eggs per day. My question is shouldn't they all start laying around the same time?
I have 2 barred rock roosters about 15 weeks old and for some reason the feathers on the ends of their wings are ruffled/worn off almost. Anyone have any ideas what could cause this?
