I am located in North Carolina and have just sold my home, but we have not found a new home to suit our needs, so it will be apartment living until we can find something perfect.
I must get rid of my large coop (8x8 and could fit a hundred birds) and 14 of my beautiful girls. The flock...
I think it depends on what you are planning to do with them. Do you want them for your own consumption or are you selling them? How many people are in your family? How much land do you have?
There are so many variables, it's not feasible to give an answer with the info provided...
I have no idea what's the matter with my girls, but I have some from March's hatch that are not laying. A SLW, BO and 2 White Rocks....... They are squatting, so I'm hoping any day now.
Love ours!! We have a Marans that goes broody with the moon like clockwork!! I also have an Australorp that has gone broody once in her first season, so we'll see about next year. I have two new cochins and a silkie/cochin cross to also help with brooding next year. I will NEVER use a box...
I think mama hens will do that sometimes. I say it was an unplanned pregnancy, so let nature take it's course. I am not too sentimental about my poultry though... so feel free to ignore my opinion.
Yep! I'm going through that as well. No eggs for us, but we have a smaller flock and 4 young birds are just starting to lay, so we should get enough eggs for our family for the next few months until our older girls grow back some feathers. I think for the small flock owner it's important to...
I have five chickens of laying age, but have not been getting many eggs at all. They seem to be molting, the bottom of their backs look raggedy and are missing feathers and some of them are bald on their bellies.
Two of the bald belly girls have gone broody recently. Do molting chickens go...
Does anyone breed Black Australorps towards the standard? I LOVE mine, but they are hatchery quality. I would love to see what a bird from a breeder looks like.
I'm not sure if the babies have anything, but I just found some little worms in one of my adult birds. They roam my yard, so I need to get this problem solved asap because my kids, dogs and cats are also in the yard. The baby birds are being raised by a broody, so if I treat the flock, they...
I would let the mamas keep the chicks and just treat the rest of your flock. You can treat the mamas in a few weeks when their babies are going on their own. It's SOOOO much easier to allow the hens to raise them then to do it on your own.
I have my broody hen raising four chicks that I put under her one night about two weeks ago. They have been doing fine except one, our lav orp. That chick's head seems very small for it's size and today it's acting very odd. It keeps throwing it's head back and falling down. At first I...
When I got home, mama and FOUR baby chicks ran to the driveway! I am so thankful that the chick survived the night, especially because it is my daughter's favorite!! Praise God!!
I am so thankful my husband walked our dogs last night instead of letting them go out in the yard. My beagle is a...
My broody hen is raising 4 chicks and one of them is gone. I left home at about 10am this morning and my husband got home at around 9pm tonight. I am out of town for the night. Broody mama was in the coop sitting on 3 chicks. One is missing and my husband can't find it. Lows tonight are...
Awww... poor girl. Living in a box in an apartment... There is so much information on BYC about proper hen care. I'm so glad the owner has come to the site and was able to find some help already. Good luck!
I had a Black Australorp rooster that was the sweetest rooster in the world. When I live in a neighborhood that allows roos, I will be searching for one like him.
