Thanks all. Unfortunately, I lost her today. It was a canine and not a hawk as I had thought and her trachea was punctured. We think it was a fox based on where the attack happened and the fact that my dogs were locked inside this morning when it happened. I had the vet euthanize her as this...
My favorite girl has been attacked by something this morning...I suspect a hawk based on the dime sized wounds on her shoulders and complete lack of feathers on her neck. I have for her in quarantine in a crate in the house (it's 102 here in Austin). I put lanacane on her wounds and a watching...
I live in Austin, Texas and I have had my girls about 18 months. Black Stars, Buff Orphingtons, Golden Sex Links and americaunas were in my first set of gals and they have all done very well. I installed a misting system on a timer to my sprinkler that goes off in the late afternoons when it is...
I got a good look at one of my girl's vent today and I believe I see lice (light brown, very small crawlers around her vent and bottom.). I'm going to use sevin in hose to treat but I've been thinking about how it started. They have access to a yard where they take lots of dust baths and spend...
I've got two americaunas and one turned out to be a layer...they turned one year old three weeks ago and I've finally given up that she will lay. I was talking to a brooder and he told me that they are a more likely breed to be "barren". My girl goes to the slaughter house next month and I'm...
Today is the 6th day running with only two eggs from my one year old 7 girl flock. I was averaging 5 a day until last week for months on end. I've checked their food, water and light situation...all are good. I thought it might be that they had found a new spot in the bigger yard to lay so I...
Today I found an odd egg in my box. It is from either my blackstars or buff. It is rough and speckled with lots of white so something is throwing this girls pigmentation process off. Any clues as to why and if I need to worry! FYI, they are all about a year old, eating organic feed, bugs and...
Gotta say that my buff and my black stars are the best girls all around. Quiet, great disposition and wonderful producers. I love having colored eggs, but if I had to start all over again, I'd go with Buffs and black stars exclusively! They also do great in the Texas heat.
Mygirls production is shortening along with the days. I have no power to coop soimlooking for a solution that is solar powered to give them a few hours of lighting team or dusk.... All options I've seen are too dimto make a difference. Ideas?
Ive got seven girls (variety of breeds) all hatched in early Feb. They all appear happy and healthy but one of them still isn't producing! They get good free range time, eat plenty of protein and are in a nice coop with plenty of airflow for Texas heat. Should I be concerned? I'm getting...
Their sisters are black stars and buffs, all have been producing for weeks. What gives? They have a nice coop with late enclosed run. A mister on six hours daily. A full supply of fresh water via a nipple system and rain barrels. Shade. Sand. Treats from the garden and kitchen. You name...
Got a "starter egg" this am from another of my girls. Most are squatting now so I'm hopeful I'll be at 5-6 a day soon enough! My neighbors are getting anxious for their egg supply to start!
got our first today from my black sex link. 24 weeks old and i was really starting to stress out! Still waiting on her 6 sisters (one more black sex link, two ameracaunas, and one buff...all 24 weeks and two golden sex links at 18 weeks), but I am hopeful that this means that I won't ever have...
