A little history...
About six years ago we got chicks and raised them through their entire lives until they didn't lay so we got rid of them last fall. So we currently have no birds. We are getting six more chicks in May. We have a coop that is four by six with a covered run already. The...
So we are trying to figure out what to do with our three 5 year old non-laying hens. We also have two 2 year olds If we cull them now, will it hurt the two remaining (more birds, more body heat)?
We do have a heated perch and we live in Central Vermont, so winters can be quite cold.
FYI...
Hoop and Coop
So here is our coop and run. I decided I wanted something unique because we all love something unique. I'm somewhat handy, but not a carpenter by any means. I like the hoop tractors and found a simple design from this post. While most hoops are built to be tractors, our will be...
So I'm making this page to enter into the feeder contest but I did not come up with the idea. It came from the following post along with many other PVC feeder ideas. The feeder is simply a 4 inch PVC pipe with a 90 degree angle piece, and a cap on either end. Add a couple screws to hold the...
So our 18 month chickens (2 Barred Rock, 2 Buff Orphington) have slowed down for the winter like they should be doing. My wife and I are considering a light to increase the production but it leads to the question... Is it healthier to let them stop and recover or keep them going without a...
Last year we had a mat heater and I'm pretty sure it did absolutely nothing. I admit the idea of heating a coop is more for the humans than the chickens but have an idea anyway... Has anyone tried heating just he perch? It would seem to be the most direct way of heating the birds and not...
Our buff Orphington has feather loss on the back of her head and on her upper wings. The skin looks a little raw and a slight amount of blood behind her head. We would suspect the other chickens are pecking at her, but we have not seen the other chickens doing so.
Background. Four chickens...
and the winner was... raw. And they loved it.
As far as eating things raw, we need to conciser humans eat shellfish raw and to understand the dangers of that, you need to take a class in parasitology. Ultimately it was easier and by not cooking it down, I saved a few calories by not loosing it...
dang it!!! one vote for raw, one vote for cooked, and one vote for eat it yourself. I need a deciding vote here folks (and eat it yourself is not on the ballot).

So I just separated out a large package of chicken from the store. I now have a small pile of chicken fat and chicken scraps. How can I prepare this to feed my birds? I was just going to pan fry it and soak up the grease with break chunks. Can I give it to them raw? I figure my birds could...
My wife and I are looking into adding a coop heater. I have read enough to know that the heater is more for our peace of mind than the chickens health. That is why I want to aim low. I am looking at this heater...
So my four birds have eaten mash since we got them as hatchlings. I recently switched to pellets and I have noticed my feeder stays full much longer. My observation is that they waste much less pellets than mash and they are probably eating just as much. Is this what others have found?
So its my first winter with chickens and am wondering if and how much warmer should the coop be. Right now, it does not appear to have any temp improvement. I also realize that keeping them out of the wind is just as important.
the details. Live in central Vermont, 4 chickens, 4x6 coop, lots...
wow... those are completely different questions. You might want to try posing the interbreeding question on another section, the short answer it you will get a chicken mutt, but they are all the same specie. Corn... I'm guessing that they can digest it fine, but if in doubt, moderation is a...
"So is cholesterol!... But alas, most prefer to blindly follow the diet dictocrats as opposed to REAL Science."
Going off topic, but... your body makes its own cholesterol. While there are essential fatty acids (because the human body can not make them), there is no such thing as "essential"...
