I, too, live in the Sherman area - behind GCC. I've never used antibiotics or wormers and have never had a problem. I am an organic gardener and have a lil over 2 acres and my chickens get to free range on some weekends and occasionally during the week if I get home from work at a decent hour...
Hi! My name is Gail and I live in beautiful North Texas. I started out in March 2009 with 4 Buff Orpingtons, 4 New Hampshire Reds and 4 Easter Eggers. I've lost 3 to hawks, 1 to a neighbor's dog, 1 to a coyote and one to an ignorant teenager! I designed and built (by myself!) a cedar coop...

Ditto! Mine would rather starve than eat those large pellets. I give mine a 20% Allway blend and they lay extremely well on it. Of course, I think as much gets on the ground as in their tummies!
Sorry to disagree with some, but everything in your original post about what she drove by and went through to get to your house screams fraud. I know that our church in San Francisco constantly received requests for handouts. The minister, being a seasoned soul, NEVER gave out cash. He would...
I live in North Texas and have lots of cedar trees on my property (or did before I built my run!). Since you're in East Texas, you'll have access to lots of cedar trees. I cut my some of my easter cedar trees down (the kind that stink) and made my own "natural" poles" sunk into the ground and...
Meant to add if you look at my BYC page, you'll see that I achieved something like by framing my door which brough the receiving side to the same depth as the door - hope that makes sense!
Simplest way I can think of is to take a small piece of wood the thickness of your door and screw it to the non-hinge side into the door where you would want a latch to go into (to bring it up the the same thickness-depth of the door). In other words, if you use something called a barrel latch...
None of my chickens ever cared for pellets - tried it once and had to throw the bag out for the wild critters. Perhaps they were just use to the crumble. If you do get pellets, I recommend you start with a small bag!
The sad fact is that RIGHT before the dog entered our yard and the bobcat hit, I had just told my husband that I had this feeling that a bobcat was lurking in the outer boundaries, just waiting for us to turn our backs. Shortly after the first attack, I was able to round the young ones up into...
I do have some dried meal worms and will give him some of those. I dipped his beak into the egg, but he ignored it. Yesterday, he was walking around the coop a bit, but today is a different story. I did put some silvadene cream (an expensive prescription antibiotic) under his wing yesterday...
Hi all - the Bobcats are back with a revenge this year. On Sunday, my hubbie and I were watching our chickens free-range when all the sudden, a large, stray dog came running up in our back yard (we have 2 open acres that are very secluded-tons of trees). As soon as we stood up, he bolted...
I have a 2 year old BO hen that stopped laying completely about 6 months ago. She was always very broody and laid an egg only about 3 times a week. I think some chickens are just better than others. One of her "sisters", a NHR, is the same age and lays as well as my younger girls...so you...
I use a 250 red bulb as well, but start out with it raised up a bit. Chicks know when they are too cold or too hot. If they are in the corners as far as they can get from the light, then they are too hot. Raise it up a bit and see if they start moving around. Good luck!
Was at Lowe's recently and couldn't believe I saw a large canister of dried meal worms on the shelf and for only $6-7. Says it's 6 oz. which fills up about a 4-5 measuring cup. Sweet deal! Had plans to start my own live mealworm production, but other things have taken over my list of...
I LOVE the cypress wood - don't think I've seen it anywhere around where I live! For an idea on a nest box, check out my BYC page. I've installed the box outside the coop and secured it by sliding it into the inside of the coop. Hard to explain, so you'd have to see it. I can easily gather...
You have done a great job, wow Love your golden and the puppy too.
You have a beautiful place! My husband was born and raised in Basking Ridge, NJ - are you close to that? I miss my golden boy - he had such a personality - but it's much easier fitting a dachshund into a small car!
We lost one of the kittens from Winnie's first litter as posted above. My girls were still in grade school and were very sad about it since she was their favorite. But I saw it as a life lesson for them and we had a burial/funeral service and placed her in our "pet cemetary" and said a prayer...
