    Chicken tidbitting at owner

Roosters I've only dealt with 4 roosters since 2023 when I brought home Sussex chicks. Joel was brooder raised, no adult hens. He was friendly with me except as a cockerel, but I don't recall anything besides a peck or so as his hormones raged. He became a good roo, took care of his gals...

So far I lost Joel at 13 months (seizure) and I found Martha dead under the roost at 2. Hannah and Rahab will be 3 in February, they're my oldest. I don't know their average lifespan, but as they're not a production breed, should be longer.

Not that I've noticed. Martha was chatty, and Joanna is probably her daughter if it's an inherited trait.

My "quieter" flock, with chatty Esther (SS), and the Dominiques honking. You can't hear the OEGB pullets in this video:

When I chose Speckled Sussex I was under the impression that they were quiet. Not mine: :gig

I gave them looseleaf lettuce, darker green and more tender than head lettuce.

I do. And I really enjoy them. Most of mine are very friendly, some are "chatty". I've had four roosters so far, and only one was a jerk. Zaccheus is a good roo, takes care of his gals. The SS get more white tips with each molt. Hannah, on the right, will be 3 in February. ETA: Video of the...

    Your 2025 Garden

I'm still feeling bleh from a tooth extraction on Friday, but managed to water my seedlings yesterday. No rain in sight for this week, at least.

Or lettuce? The OEGB pullets aren't laying yet, but appear to be integrating in Silas' flock anyway.

Yes, thank you! I was having trouble envisioning it.

Agreed. They give me joy. From about 1992, and my first flock. The green leg ring identifies her as "Clover".

So you didn't reassemble the biscuit pieces into biscuit shapes, but just placed them in the pan nilly-willy? I'm trying to picture it.

When you cut the biscuits did you place them in the pan as biscuits or jumbled up?

Not my Speckled Sussex. They see me approaching and stampede towards the door. Except the chicks...I swear they're getting bigger daily! They are three months old. She Who Brings Grapes got too close...

Cabbage in the near bed Found my plastic in the shed! I'll be placing a cattle panel trellis over the bed and add plastic once we get close to a frost. I did that one year with collards and lettuce, and they grew really well. I only lost the lettuce when it got especially cold outside, below...
