    Roll away nesting box

Thanks so much for the info. I'll try the crumble and continue with oyster shell. They get a fair amount of table/garden scraps as well.

    Roll away nesting box

Thanks for the replies. I'll do the shavings in the roll away and see what happens. Right now I have to corners blocked in the coop where they have decided to lay. Funny thing is, my egg eaters have stopped eating the eggs. Hopefully I can get them back in the boxes before they start again.

    Roll away nesting box

I guess I'll have to try that if they continue. I've seen many videos on the use of roll away and they make it look so easy.

    Roll away nesting box

I was wandering if anybody has had this problem that I'm having. I built a new roll away egg boxes because I have an egg eater or two. I decided to build roll always instead of knocking off egg layers. So now the hens won't use the boxes and lay in the coop. Any suggestions or should I be...

    What kind are these guys?

I don't know much about them. I believe they ate bantams. Probably lay smaller eggs.

    What kind are these guys?

We recently were given these 6 girls but have no idea what kind they are. Would somebody happen to know. They are supposed to be 6-8 weeks old. They have feathered feet, and are a little small.

Please help: eyes crusted shut, what do I do??

I thought my roo was going to die yesterday. He was essentially blind because both eyes were crusted shut, as you see from pics. Since I got no help here, and could find no sound advice elsewhere, I just used my best judgement. I separated him from the flock, washed his eyes with hot water and...

Please help: eyes crusted shut, what do I do??

This morning I discovered my roo on the roost w/ both eyes badly crusted over. After inspecting the rest of my flock of 20, I found one hen whose eyes are half closed, but no visible crusting. I see very tiny white mites near his eyes. Please advise how I might remedy this. Thanks in advance!

    When will the laying start.

Thank you for the responses. I guess I'm a little anxious. I am glad to know that others have had new chicks and they've started in the winter. And as a side note, I do provide at least 14 hrs of light, that is the natural light and the light I provide.

    When will the laying start.

June 20th, we bought day old chicks to add to our group. 2 buffs, 2 silver laced, 2 sussex, 2 ancona, 2 brahmas, 2 Columbian Wyandottes, 1 Americona. It's now mid December and they haven't started laying. We use a light, we feed twice a day. We use a cookie tin heater for water as we live in...

    What are these things!

I looked at those pictures, they were much bigger than what I was seeing. What do eggs look like when they first start in the vent? These things were a small pea size, clear and loose.

    What are these things!

These things were inside the chicken. I wish I had a picture to show. I don't think they were mites. But I've never seen mites. I wouldn't think they would be inside the cavity.

    What are these things!

No, they were tiny, clear, firm circles that look just like tapioca.

    What are these things!

We butchered a couple old egg layers today and while dressing them out I saw these tiny little things that to me looked like fish eggs or tapioca looking stuff. What are they. I have butchered many meat birds but this was the first egg layers and I've never seen this before. what was it?

4-wk-old pullet found on back, still alive.

Just found a pullet lying on back - both feet up....no idea what's wrong. It can't stand up, just falls over. It was fine this morning.
