    To catch a duck

I thought I'd throw in an update. We're at about a week and she's putting weight on the leg. She's still favoring it quite a bit, but she's up to three 45 minute hydrotherapy sessions a day. I think another week or two and she'll be ready to join everyone else again. She is a bit cranky about...

    To catch a duck

It seems to be a back injury. There wasn't any damage on the x-ray but there is some trauma on her back - maybe a deep tissue bruise or torn muscle. When we put her in the tub this morning, she started with her leg straight back, but by the end of the 20 minutes she had it down and was moving...

    To catch a duck

The family: 21 ducks (mallards and khakis) - 16 hens, 4 drakes. (1 baby from a weirdly well hidden egg - she's about 8 weeks old) The setup: 5 fenced acres with a 3 acre pond. A smaller fenced yard, 3 predator proof pens. The predators: mostly stray dogs, cats, hawks. Possibly foxes, raccoons...

    Feed ducklings

They forage (they have 5 acres and a pond, including a garden with multiple greens, flowers, and fruit). The bird seed is just a treat to keep them coming home at night so I can put them up. She's a Khaki and the dad is a Mallard. In the winter they get a proper diet, but in the summer, if I put...

    Feed ducklings

They have 5 acres and a pond (including a garden with multiple greens and fruit and flowers). They aren't even close to unhealthy or starving. The bird seed is just to keep them coming home at night. When I give them duck food, it just goes bad unless it's in the winter when that's their primary...

    Feed ducklings

My mama duck just had ducklings. She generally forages for food - we have several acres and a pond - and I supplement with a little bird seed daily. She just had ducklings. Can the ducklings have bird seed with a little brewer's yeast mixed in? I expect they'll probably start foraging with...

    Shrubs for nesting

Hello everybody. I have a female duck that refuses to nest in my yard. Every year she takes up residence with one of my neighbors (who fortunately don't mind). She seems to prefer to nest under bushes and shrubbery but I don't have any in my yard. My goal this year is to create an area in my...

    Entice ducks to property

Yeah. If I get an unhappy neighbor I might have to do that. I just hate to because that would make them sad.

    Entice ducks to property

It's a shared pond. We all have fenced yards which basically - between the fences and the houses, fences the pond - if that makes sense. So there are fences and houses surrounding the pond completely. I let the ducks out of my yard (or they fly out sometimes - they are Khaki Campbells so they...

    Entice ducks to property

Yes. Let out during the day, and the pond is fenced all the way around. They have a predator proof pen for night.

    Entice ducks to property

They know all the neighbor dogs so unless it's a stray (which is rare inside the fence line) or the neighbors get a new dog that wants to eat my ducks, it shouldn't be a problem. All the neighbors know about them and look out for them. I really have some awesome neighbors.

    Entice ducks to property

The whole pond is fenced. While there is still be a concern for predators, it's low. She comes in at night. I've lived here for 15 years and never seen a predator inside the fence.

    Entice ducks to property

She's odd. She will not lay in the pen. I've kept her in there until 11:00 and she still lays at the neighbor's. As I said, he doesn't mind, but my hubby doesn't like me wandering through people's yards so it would be nice if I could make her a happy place on my property where she'd lay.

    Entice ducks to property

Hey all! I have kind of a weird problem. I live on a shared pond. Every day I let my ducks out on the pond and they have taken to laying their eggs in the neighbor's yard. The neighbor hasn't complained but my hubby tells me I can't go onto my neighbor's property to get the eggs. They also...

    Broody duck won't come home

She's doing well. She is hanging at the pond, doesn't seem upset anymore about her eggs being gone. She comes back in the yard several times a day. Thank you for asking :)

    Broody duck won't come home

Thank you Miss Lydia. You have been a God send in my whole duck fiasco. She didn't come home again tonight, but she didn't sit on the nest all day after I took her eggs. She was out sunning and swimming which makes me feel a little better. I think she's snubbing me because I took her eggs. As...

    Broody duck won't come home

Oh my gosh! I feel terrible! She saw me by her nest and immediately went looking for her eggs. I feel like such an evil person!

    Broody duck won't come home

...I watched where she was going. I found out she's gone broody and is sitting on a nest. I'm not super worried about predators in the summer, but I *really* don't want ducklings. I live in a subdivision in an incorporated suburb (it's not the country even though we have huge yards) and just...
