This sweet rooster was dropped off at my house today by a young man who had won him at the fair. I couldn't turn him away although hubby feels differently so I have to find a new home for this guy. BUT, i can't put him on Craigslist or elsewhere, because I do not even know what he is!
(btw If...
...BRAHMA!
I also purchased my "Mottled Java", and my "SLW" from her as well....sooo....what do you think? I'm pretty sure on the SLW...but *sigh* let's just be sure....
I apologize for the blurry pics of the "Mottled Java" but my camera was having a hard time focusing on her!
Thanks in...
I have posted on these before, but am now breaking the posts up as the chicks get older instead of listing all 8 together.
This week I have Evelyn and Paris.
I think Evelyn is a EE rooster, but she/he looks awfully feminine. I know very little about EE's, tho I am trying awfully hard to...
Since finding all you on BYC I've discovered my Delawares were hatchery stock Columbian Rocks, my "NH's" are Production Reds. ....my "Araucanas" are all EE's, oh and my "Ameraucana"...she's an EE too....
So now I'm posting my Buff Brahma "Belle", and my Golden Comet "Honey"....
Let me...
Hi, and thanks in advance for taking the time to read this...
My quail, all adults, were each laying an egg a day all summer, but nobody has laid since the last week of August.
I know that sometimes they need a break and will stop for a few weeks, but is 7+ weeks normal?
I also know...
Sooo knowing that most of my chickens came from hatchery eggs, and novice chicken farmers like myself, I am starting to question ALL of my supposed breeds.
These two girls were sold to me as New Hampshires.
I thought they were Rhode Island Reds....
Maybe they're Sex-links.....
I really don't...
I do have another post about ALL of my juvenile chickens but these are the only two who look different this week, .. so I am starting a new thread with just these two girls..boys...chickens... these guys...gals...suddenly have these new funky tail feathers and I am wondering if they're the...
Added fourth lady below:
I bought these 3 ladies a couple of years ago from a gentleman who said they were araucanas...and that one was a welsummer...all ended up laying very light blue eggs, so I know I do not have a welsummer which I explained to the man...so then the guy tried to tell me she...
Please forgive my ignorance, am trying very hard to learn!
I assumed Big Poppa was a Barred Rock. Daddy is a Columbian Rock (hatchery stock), momma is Barred Rock.
He has the BR pattern, but his coloring is wrong, way too dark. So... would that make him a black sex-link?...or just a barred...
No, hunny...his leg is NOT supposed to look like that when you're done plucking!
We processed 20 more chickens yesterday! Instead of post pictures here, I am just linking my blog as it's posted there already. If you could leave your comments on this post though, on BYC, that would be great...
Long story made as short as I can (still quite long, I apologize):
I had 20+ eggs in incubator... first night temp spiked and I woke to a 120 degree bator in the morning.
Assumed eggs wouldn't make it (had been spiked for hours I'm sure) and we had JUST that day before given away our...
**UPDATED PICS IN POST 25, Page 3. THANK YOU!!**
I have 8, 4 week old chicks that I am unsure of breed and gender on.
My roosters are Columbian Rocks (Mutts possibly), and my various hens are as follows:
New Hampshire Red
White Araucana
Brown Araucana
Brown Ameraucana
Silver-Laced...
I had 9 chicks hatch yesterday (incubator) and have no idea what these little guys might be. I had put an assortment of blue and brown eggs in the bator.
3 of these guys hatched out of my araucana/ameraucana/EE eggs...but I am not sure who (except the first one pictured below)
My roosters...
UPDATE IN POST 12!
I've noticed my 2 biggest roos picking on my leghorn (her names IS Leghorn btw) over the past week. We had planned on culling the two roos this weekend, leaving just the smaller, nicest one. But when I opened the henhouse this morning, I found Leghorn with the back of her...
So we've been having a hard time catching the coons that are slaughtering our flocks. We would put the marshmallows in the back of the trap, or the peanutbutter sandwich, whatever bait we chose to use, and we'd wake up in the morning and most of the time the bait was still there.
Then there...
Update: Post #45
I haven't been on here in forever. Mainly because I've been so devastated. Today pushed me back here.
In June, I lost 5 chickens, presumably to a coon. My son forgot to lock the chickens up... it happens, I know.
July 5, I lost 24, 3 week old cornish babies, in ONE night...
Someone in a nearby town is selling 55lb bags of lupin beans/seed (40% protein) for $4.00/bag. I am picking four bags up next Thursday, but now I am wondering if anyone on this forum has ever used this before ...fed exclusively, or combined with other feeds? What a drastic difference that...
I have 9 eggs as of yesterday from my new girls!! There are 6 girls and one boy in that pen, so I do not know what to expect, as far as fertility rates goes, but with all those little piles of "shaving cream" that seem to be popping up all over their pen.... I'm hoping!!
Going to wait until...
Update with 2 week pics, in post #14
Here is our new batch of 25 little guys and gals.
They are Cornish X and will be one week old on Wednesday.
Last batch we waited until they were 1 1/2 weeks to let them run around, but the weather has been nice enough that they didn't seem to miss the heat...
