I'm finding feathers around the yard and haven't checked to see if new ones are coming in. They all eat layer feed, fresh corn once in a while, soaked grains and blueberries a few times a week and they free-range in our yard. Lots of bugs and grass.
My EE is 20 months old and molted in September. She grew back all of her feathers as well as her tail but is still not laying again. In the past week, she started losing her tail feathers. Why?? She's happy, eating, clucking, and running around. No rooster in the yard and other 3 sisters do not...

Why would she be losing her tail feathers...
I have a molting EE and have been looking for different ways to get her more protein. I set one small can of tuna down for all 4 girls and it was like they hadn't eaten in days. I'm so glad to hear it's a good, once a week snack.
It is normal for them to have caramel colored poo here and there and is related to stress. Even the smallest thing will cause runny poo momentarily. If it persists then I would worry. We've been doing construction and the girls have been pooing runny caramel here and there.
Hello! I am in Chandler. I did a bunch of research and only wanted girls. Cal Ranch in Casa Grande has 99% guaranteed female chicks, they are vaccinated the minute they are born and are separated by breed. Too many places throw all the different chicks into one bin and don't guarantee the sex...
Hello All Arizona chicken lovers! I'm in Chandler and have 4, 11mo old hens. We made it through last summer really well and they have laid consistently.
I love all the advice and experiences!
Happy to be a part of this group. As we swing into summer, my advice is, lots of water, water the yard...
I have two reds who are 11 mo old and consistently lay.
Question: Do your reds mind if other hens are laying in the coop while they are in there? Mine prefer to be alone but if the others want to lay in any of our 4 nesting boxes in the coop, they don't say anything.
I also have 2 EE and they...
Oh, I bet you were so upset about leaving them out. UGH! We have quite a few roaming neighborhood cats and one night I had a nightmare about leaving my big RIR girl (Lucy) out all night and in the morning she was dead. A few nights later I did just that but she was fine. Really shocked me when...
Vermont, I bet it gets REAL cold! In Arizona we will get some teens or twenties nights but maybe only a few. Dead winter we will usually go to 30 F at night but 45 in the day. I will give my girls the option but their luxury condo of a coop is pretty comfy. They have full run of our 1/2 acre...
Thank you so much. The past two mornings my smallest RIR stayed behind a few minutes while the others ran out of the coop to play. She eventually comes out and runs in the frosty grass but is hesitant at first.
Thank you!
I live in central Arizona and our night time temps have been dropping to the low 30's. Day temps are fine for my 4, 8mo old girls at the mid to high 60's. Their coop has chicken wire windows and is wood and spacious but cold.
How cold is too cold to let them out to run in the frosty grass in...
My girls are not under the radar but I don't want my neighbors to complain. I've talked to them and they are all cool with them. I am guilty of babying them and have begun the "breaking process". I still go in the yard but NO treats unless it's warranted and they've eaten their pellets. They...
