Just visiting. I'm needing a chick fix since mine are already 12 WEEKS OLD!!! Can barely wait to build the coop extension so we can get some more babies... They are all so cute! I'm jelly!
Chicken math creates other math too- coop extension math, budgeting for coop extension math, etc.
Got some broccoli from the garden and we blanched it before putting it in the freezer. I've never grown broccoli before so was really surprised at the pop in color after boiling and the ice bath. These were baby broccoli plants. The standard heads should be ready soon. It's so exciting growing...
You are off to a good start in that you are so willing to accept advice and help. So here is another tidbit, switch that chicken wire out for hardware cloth asap. Chicken wire will keep your chickens in but won't keep predators out. Dogs, raccoons, foxes, coyotes can tear through it. And some...
I don't have a PVC run but I wanted to make an obstacle course for my kids and it uses some PVC in places. Is there anything one can do to coat the PVC to improve its durability? Perhaps paint it?
From what I can tell he isn't actually hurting her. Why would I separate him if he is doing what cocks do? He has all the makings of a great rooster already. Protective but docile around his humans. Makes sure the ladies get in on the grub, and he would make pretty babies if I ever decide to...
We have an 11 week old Welsummer who seems to be ahead of the curve on everything. He has been crowing since 5 weeks old. A few days ago, I saw him "attack" one of our hens. Coincidentally it's the hen he seems to favor/hang out with the most. I thought it was really strange. I can't say exactly...
There is also the option of building a tunnel that allows your chickens to pass under the fence. It would likely cost a lot less in materials. Literally build a box out of Pressure treated wood that has two ends open. Dig down under your fence, place the tunnel and re-bury. You might use...
Made our trigger chicken feeder and finished it just a couple days ago. Couldn't spend $40 on a trigger feeder so just used stuff we had lying around the house. It holds 25-30 pounds of organic crumbles. We have six chickens using it right now.
And our waterer is a fairly simple two verticle...
Yeppers. We tried figuring out something to make a T at the top of a threaded rod but we didn't want to spend much money. Most of this stuff was just random stuff we had lying around so that it practically cost us nothing.
Hey all, just here to show off our new trigger feeder and tell a bit about how we made it. I originally got the idea from aarts post...
Find that article here...

and messaged her with a couple questions.

Haha! The next morning, the tape was pulled off but it had stopped bleeding. He had a scab form on it but they obviously ripped that off. Fortunately, it didn't reopen the wound so he is doing great.
Finally got the trigger feeder set up to how we like it. We took lots of pics so will make a post later in detail about it.
Plus we got out vertical water nipples set up on a bucket. I would rather have horizontal but we can always another watering system as our flock grows later.
Good to know. We have a screen manufacturing company with a warehouse about 1.5 hours away from us. They had 48" x 100' rolls for $92! If they ever hike their prices, we'll have to check out amazon. But I like the idea of helping local companies too.
I've read that if any of the feather shaft remains in the skin (is they were broken off during pecking and picking instead of the shaft fully sliding out), they won't grow new feathers until those shafts shed naturally during a molt. Hopefully someone else can help shed some light on what may be...
