I had a chick lose a toe to the bone from a cat. He just took the toe off from under the outdoor brooder (I promptly closed off the bottom!). I put bacitracin on it three times a day for a week when it seemed to be scabed over well and the inflammation went down. She is now dubbed...
Yes! I just wanted to expand in case someone else came later! Thank you for posting the thread, it has good info for anyone else in this position. Mr. Sussex is already feeling better and none too pleased that he's in solitary with only water for the night
Even though no one replied to this, I wanted to expand a bit. I went and watched him shake his head on one foot and twist his head around funny. It looked like he had a tumor on his neck so I caught him and felt around, it felt normal, the crop felt big and watery. I wanted to see if he had a...
This is a rooster, he just looks weird. I can't put my finger on it. Bright eyes, no discharge. He will randomly open his mouth like he's choking, but no sound comes out. He doesn't act lethargic(healthy appetite, moves around, drinks normally), but very dazed. He will walk right up to me and if...
Shipped guinea eggs, 21 total. 10 never developed, 4 early death, 7 made it to day 23. Incubated at 100, 43% humidity, upright, circulated air. At lockdown they were moved to another incubator at 100.3 (several thermometers to back this up, with this particular one the eggs do best at this...
One obvious cockerel, two most likely pullets. The other two I can't decide. Sorry for duplicate pictures, it was hard to get pictures when they were playing and eating. The behind picture shows the size difference in obvious cockerel and two others
Definitely could! It was leaky on the bottom and the smell about knocked you over. I removed the obvious 10 day clears and two blood ring. Sadly I tossed a bunch, but that's the risk, especially with shipped eggs.
I have a rotten egg, well at least one. I can tell by the smell in my bator. Problem is, how do I tell which one? I have some that are ten days old and some that are almost three days old. None look weepy. I will be tossing any of the clear ten day olds, but what if it's the three day olds...
Long story short in having horrible luck between a splay legged chick and a set of kittens. I think I have the splay leg under control, but through the bottom of my brooder one of my kittens (8 months old) got the toe of one of my chicks. It's a nub with the bone sticking out. I am applying...
I have a chick who hatched out Sunday and has one leg that slightly splays out, so it's just not under its body. It can get around, but obviously struggles. I tried hobbling with a bandaid but within a few hours the little booger has gotten a foot loose. It's miserable with the hobbles, but I...
I had some splash marans eggs shipped and after large air cells (still trying to figure out why since it was only some of them) saddle shaped air cells I was very happy to wake up to a chirping baby one day early (and another pipped egg!). Being the meddler I am I opened the lid to look at the...
I recandled this morning as suggested and there was nothing, opened at the air cell to confirm. All dead. Cleaned the incubator and will be setting the new batch, thanks!
I bought some barnyard mix eggs, 17 hatched, I have about 10 more that haven't, of those I'm positive 7 are dead. I started these off wrong (tried an experiment with te incubator) and the ones that have hatched did so between day 20&22, the ones on day 22 really didn't fare well but seem to be...
Thanks for your help! I just got up and carefully broke all around leaving a small piece. Then he kicked out his leg an I realized it was just goo that got stuck to his leg...whoops! Freed him and am entirely less concerned
It's the chick equivilant of a cord, he's dragging around half of the shell still, should I make the shell smaller? Should I just move him to a box alone with a friend and a light until it falls off? I didn't think cutting was a great idea, but I'm lacking coffee and my brain couldn't get creative!
If it's the incubator it's really not a huge deal. It was bought cheaply and in a pinch (it was new, this is it's third time). I planned on getting a different incubator this winter anyway. But my mom was going to buy this one off me, don't want to sell it to her if it's defective.
Humidity is the same, unless humidity from showers changes it temporarily. When I I look it's between 34 & 38%. Bathroom never gets below 72 (at night with the heater, 76 day with the heater) never above 78 (78 a/c, 76 night a/c, my first hatch was on my counter, kitchen is held at these temps...
I have a plastic janoel 12 incubator. Automatic turner. Three temperature gauges, not including the included one. All read 99.3-100.2, the one that comes with it is set at 37.8 (100.4). I hatched 6 black australorps on day 19/20. No problem. 12 buff eggs went in, 9 devolped. Put in three...
