I am so sick of buy crummy hen saddles. They are either cheap and flimsy or expensive and made from canvas that is hard on my babies’ skin. I don’t mind spending the money, but I need something soft against their skin but robust. PLEASE, any suggestions would be wonderful!
I have tried for six years to get barn, swallows to nest near my barn, in my barn, anywhere. At last I have a nest in my garage, which is not a garage really it’s more of a barn.
I have a beautiful nest and a pair of swallows that dutifully laid six eggs. I checked this morning no eggs. NONE...
Just had a hawk hit, get one my girls and give up. Feathers are everywhere… but all my white girls are present, so he gave up. I actually saw white feathers floating down to the ground… about 15 feet up!
Checking the feathers, there is only one girl whose feathers are … not normal. I’m going...
August 2022.
Can’t get any worse.
Lost my beautiful beautiful beautiful SLO rooster. Injured defending his girls. I tried everything to nurse him back to health, but he didn’t make it.
Lost my job after working at the same place for 12 years (redundant.)
Today, I lost another SLO, during...
OK. I'm probably the last person on earth to see this YT video:
What on earth is that chicken's breeding? Obviously gold-laced something or other... but with blue legs and feet?
Anyone have any ideas?
Hey, can we keep track of the emerging cicadas?
Start your post with your zip code... and follow with comments. For example:
22542 (that's my zip)
Noticed that chickens are congregating in areas they usual don't, e.g., compost pile, under large trees. I have NOT seen any cicadas, but I...
So I work on Saturdays in a feed store that produces their own special formula of feed for horses and chickens. Because they have a special formula they are also eager to keep up with the feed market, or should I say the animal feed market. So today I’m working, and I noticed in the latest issue...
I just thought I would start a thread about before you had chickens, and after you had chickens.
Here is a perfect example: before I had chickens,... a lovely camellia just getting ready to bloom.
after chickens:
If a pullet wants to lay an egg, and there's someone else on the only nest. Well, heck. Make one right beside it.
Of course, that's if you have tons of extra hay that your spoiled rotten horses won't eat.
Simple, elegant, superb.
Two eggs, laid hours before, fried in one teaspoon of unsalted, cultured butter. Salt, freshly ground pepper, and a sprinkle of fines herbs.
A simple glass of white wine, Mary’s Gone Crackers (super seed), and an old movie.
The taste was simply...wonderful. The taste...
she has yet to lay an egg ... she left her dust bath and went over to the nest. She has been sitting in the nest for several days. But nothing has been laid.
Im worried. Plus she just left the nest, no egg, but she was singing the egg song.
what gives???
Oh about three months ago I received three babies, that I thought were Crele Orpingtons, but as it turned out, are Partridge Orpingtons.
I was a little disappointed, but I still love them. They are getting very big. Well, for their age I think they’re big.
So they’ve had their first days...
Well, I invested in a new incubator ...a Nurture Right 360...bought some lavender English Orpington eggs, on eBay, and am now testing the incubator to confirm temp and humidity accuracy (eggs arrive next week.)
I have also put a space heater in the room to keep the temp at 65... the rest of the...
There have been some discussions on pellets versus crumbles, but I did not see anything with “real” food versus crumbles versus pellets.
The reason why am asking is trying to make sense of manufactured food, processed?, or actual grains that you can see.I have worked with a feed manufacturer...
I recently lost two hens to (I think) Marek's. Besides being saddened, I am now in a dilemma.
After speaking to my department of agriculture (VDACS) AND UGeorgia Poultry Science department manager, every chicken on my property has Marek's and it's just a question of 'how long' before it kills...
They are exactly 11.27 weeks old.
Eggs purchased from eBay, bought six, got six chicks!
I am guessing, and of course hoping, I have three pullets. However, if they are cockerels, that’s ok. They will have a home for life as I am starting a roo flock!

So, I wanted to listen to the news this morning. I downloaded the CBS app and proceeded to listen to 18 straight ads in a row. :rant
Fine. So I settle in ready to find out what’s going on in the world... and what do I get?
an idiotic interview with some woman who is a “futurist” who proceeds...
