No more pecked eggs since hubby's been taking the treats to them in the AM!
They have a full feeder 24/7 - not sure how I communicated otherwise, sorry.
When I said they're hungry, I just meant hungry for something tastier/more interesting than crumble... More like bored with crumble than...
OK my husband (who has almost nothing to do with the chickens, even though he is the only egg eater) hit on an idea - he took treats (scratch, leftovers, etc) out for them early in the morning. (I usually don't take out treats until the afternoon)
The 2 days that he has done this, they have...
Oh and I forgot to mention that usually they get fed egg yolks scrambled with feed & scratch every day (hubby won't eat yolks) - but for the past couple of weeks they've been getting 5 pecked open eggs scrambled with feed & scratch mixed in every day - so protein is probably not the issue either...
Thanks for the speedy replies everybody! I really appreciate you all so much.
I do check for eggs multiple times a day (I work at home, so I visit them & take out treats) but I have rollaway nest boxes, and as soon as they lay, the girls keep the egg from rolling down and peck it open.
So...
I have rollaway nest boxes, but they have figured out how to keep the egg from rolling down, & peck them open. I get 5 pecked open eggs per day from 6 chickens - once in awhile I get a whole one but it's the exception.
Also they poop all over the eggs too. Even before they started eating the...

Only you can tell whether you're ready to make a logical decision or not - I wasn't ready & here 's what happened...
I lost my beloved Laika (am eskimo) in sept 2 years ago. I was grieving hard & so depressed - ran out & got another american eskimo way too soon. (dec)
Because my decision was...
I found this old post from 2008:

florescent green , or blue green droppings is caused by moldy grain..
green droppings can also be caused by undiluted bile from the liver..especially if they don't eat enough.

I got buff orpingtons for just that reason - they are soooo mellow & quiet. I love them.
Will they sing such a loud egg song when they start laying? It's hard to imagine them doing that - they are so quiet now...
Now THAT looks tasty, mibotsu! I also was thinking the brown stuff in the pan looked kinda nasty, but didn't want to discourage Randall's cooking practice - ha ha keep working on it r!
But seriously - those birds are so cute I could never kill one. Plus don't they take a lot more work to clean...
Chicken with peanut sauce and brown rice - they really went crazy for it! I tore the meat up into tiny pieces for them & they even cleaned my hands off... If chickens could lick they would have - ha ha
Pips I was thinking the same thing. I have had 2 gsd and I would not like that dog's aggressiveness at all. She kept lunging for the treat in the handler's fist like she was going to bite. Not good... But I've never imported one from Germany either - maybe that's acceptable there idk...
I have gotten a TON of great info from searching my topic and reading archived threads. I am sooooo so grateful for all the accumulated wisdom here! Thankyouthankyouthankyou everybody!
