Yes let them get to know their area. Like I said unless good homer they will get lost.
I take mine same direction, one mile then 2 miles, then 5 miles, and so on.

As soon as I get the pigeons I will get some pics for you to identify. Snakeman said they didn't look anything like the common homers we already have. Hey maybe we will have some nice birds after all.
I do know about the feeding problem with pigs so I'm staying on top of it. When...

I banded my first pigeon in 1969 also.
I do feed a pigeon pellet during breeding season, but pigeon grain feed before shows, as they make a bigger mess with pellets.
Would not even think about free flying show birds.
Fast flying racing homer do get taken by the fast copper hawks...

Help you, sure I will need help also. Guess the Indian Fantasy. Was bred my using Indian Fantail, and Jacobins. The mini are just small Indian Fantail ( 10 oz) Have not seen any just pics.
For sure I am rehook on Pigeon, think for the rest of my life.
oegblady, I just trim the feathers on my trumpeters for breeding. You will need to trim the mane feathers, if you want to breed the Jacobin.
Sad think about some breeds, have to trim some. In the case of Jacobin they cant see to breed.
The ones like my trumpeters, those long leg feathers get...

That is so weird that you posted that on Wednesday!! I just went to the auction last night and had a pair of parlor rollers given to my son!! How cool is that?
Yes odd, I post that because thats the only breed I know that cant fly at all.
This time of the year, if they didnt set tight the egg could have froze. Lots of type of nest bowls, some paper throw away, I use metal dog dishes. Pine needle are great for nests.
If another pigeon try to move in the fighting could break the eggs.
If the nest box has a front with a small...
Really enjoy flying the homers, so much fun training young birds to home. I work over 30 miles from home, so I take them to work and turn them loose to home, they beat me home. Fun even if you dont have time to race them.
Have a few white homers will be crossing them with the good blood line of...

Sounds like your two are what we call common pigeons(wild pigeon). Nothing wrong with that, you will find most pigeon breeders started with commons. I myself was 11 yr. old climbing old barns, bridges just to get a few squeakers. My first pair I paid for was a pair of rollers. cost...
The male will also feed the hen(kissing)right befoe mating. In rare cases sometime 2 of the same sex will pair up. In the case of two female you will have 3 or 4 eggs in the nest. Of couse the males will have none.
The trumpeters do a long coo thats how they got their name from the trumping noise.
Sara you can use NPA band, most unband birds dont sell as well.
You have no plans to race, no need to use AU band. You can use homer size bands on other breed with the clean legs near the homer size.
Oeqblady, I am not here trying to correct post. will give my side, even if someone disagree.
Never had a pigeon nest mate hurt another, and my nest box have fronts so no knocking one from the nest.
Have had them hurt my older birds when they leave the nest.
No I am not always right, but any...

Most breeds yes, but with good homers very hard to break them to another loft. Yes it has been done, but with great birds alway a risk of them homing to the old loft.
Try breaking a pair after I had them for 4 years. Pull half the flight feather. Guess what the breeder I got the birds...

Sorry oegblady, but we cant alway agree, but you right we do seem that way.
Sorry to do so again, I do use the zip ties on peafowl. Until they are older then metal leg bands.
Now in the case of pigeon, seamless leg band mark what year they were hatch and etc. Unbanded birds could...
Well think to all you BYC Pigeon people, you got me hooked again.
Went to the show, oh and how I miss the pigeons.
Yep going to blame you .
Glad I am back. Now just have to join a racing club.
