Yep I still have my adorable One Wing in the house. She's such a funny bird! I swear she understands anything I say. I redid my front flower bed this year so now when the weather is decent she has a nice place to go. I also fenced it so it's safe for her.
My breeding pen is kind of scant right...
I've tried not to hatch much for a few months. It's so very hot here and has been. This year has been a total flop. Nothing has done well but ducks this year.
We're in a major drought as well.
Covid has caused so many problems. I just stay home most of the time and avoid as many people as I can.
Yes they are quite unique. I have learned that their personalities definitely come from the La Fleche. They are so much like them. And they love to talk, jut like my Breda's do.
@Gypsylion , My Breda girls aren't laying a whole lot right now. Back in January they were laying like crazy. I've been working on a breeding project trying to re-breed the Bredas for more genetic diversity. It's not a quick project for sure. I get a mottled girl every now and then but just...
One Wing my infamous house chicken pecks the cat in the head unmercifully if she get on One Wing's towel. She rares up if the cat comes near and the cat runs. I have one of my first proto-type birds in my Breda re-breading program. In fact I was so sure it was a Breda that I raised it thinking...
What a great looking group! I'm getting lots of eggs but my fertility on Bredas is really bad right now. But it is so hot!!! And prior to that it rained and rained for months.
I've lost several birds like that....not coons but silly things. Like a rooster or a hen jumping and breaking their neck. I had La Fleche for over a year before I ever got a fertile egg. Come to find out the older nicer quality rooster wasn't fertile but he kept the young boys from breeding the...
I've got a couple of old hens that are probably near 8. I doubt they lay thought. One Wing, my house chicken is old enough she no longer lays except maybe 4 weeks a year. I know she is at least 5 and maybe 6. I don't remember for sure.
I just had a great Breda hatch. There were several other...
Thanks @boskelli1571 . I'm still working on my rebreeding project but it's going to take a while. I have some crosses done and waiting for those to get laying age before I breed into the Breda flock. I've had a terrible time with the La Fleche. Just finally hatched a few after over a year of...
I have to share a little with people I know. I finally found out an article was published in the new June /July issue of Backyard Poultry Magazine. It's about Breda fowl and features a couple pictures from my flock and a quote from me. If you don't buy the magazine you can read the article by...
The brown eggs are coming from the cuckoo Breda line, if you got yours from the same source as Sylvester. Whatever was used in the cross to get the cuckoo eggs was not a Breda and therefore they are laying brown eggs sometimes.
It's a shame actually because cuckoo was an original pattern in...
I've spoken to you on a facebook La Fleche page before, but unfortunately you have mentioned you won't ship your birds. It's a shame because I would love to get some nice La Fleche lines. I don't have enough La Fleche to to be choosy at this point.
Thank you so much. I hadn't checked in here for awhile. I have been working with my Bredas to improve their hardiness and it seems to be paying off. I have quite a crew of girls available right now. I was only using one rooster for the past several months. I had grown a nice blue one up to...
It's kind of been that way all over. I know in this part of the country winter came early and I was rushing trying to get all my pens winter ready. The Breda were laying like crazy last month but I was only hatching a few other rare breeds to build my own stock. I'm still over run with chicks...
Thank you AllWildAtHeart! I do love those guys. It's so hot right now if I hatched it would be mostly roosters. One thing I found over the years is that in very hot weather it seems to kill out the female genes.
AllWildatHeart is the only one of you on this thread who has seen my Bredas in person other than the ones I have shipped to you guys. ( I just wish they had all been healthier.) I think you can appreciate their quality when you see the group up close and personal.
I have talked before about...
@AllWildAtHeart , @Sylvester017 , I think you are probably both talking about me. Good thing you didn't say anything bad! LOL
Hopefully when it cools down some I'll have some Breda to offer. They are laying really well right now but I really want to try to get them hardier before I hatch more. I...
