I noticed my oldest hen was not as mobile and stood more on one feet. Since it’s in the 10-20s I thought she was just cold, but decided to check her feet just in case. It looks like she has bumblefoot. There seems to be a giant kernel but very little swelling. it is obviously causing her...
I’ve been feeding my chickens grass. Not the stuff from my lawn mower, I pick out the variety that I know they love to eat ( I believe it’s perennial rye) and chop it up to short little bits with scissors and supplementing their diet.
Been getting some really nice tasty yolks!
and it’s in the 40s
and they’re screaming cold
and they refuse to move under the heating mat….
then you just have to move the heating mat to their roost…
I miss summer
I know this is crazy, but hear me out. I have chickens that lay dark brown eggs, and they are always smooth and shiny. but back in the day when I bought the cheapest brown eggs from the store they always felt chalky to the touch. I thought it was weird, and that they might have been dyed, but...
Brought home a crazy infestation of grain mites with my latest purchase of purina flock raiser. Didn’t catch it until it spread to my bag of layer feed and cat food :( It seems that permethrin would have been an ideal course of action if it werent for my cats sharing the same room as my...
So why do they look like 90% male? 😭😭😭

i just hatched a few goslings, and I'm debating on whether to keep a pair, one of my major concerns is inbreeding. From my understanding the original F1(?) pair were hatched from the same batch of eggs from a very small pair or trio of geese, so they are likely to be siblings.
The gosling that...
Just a random update about the hardware I chose for my coop…
3 years ago I built my own coop out of pallets and salvaged wood, as per a populate recommendation here, I put it all together with deck screws, for shallower fastenings I used stainless steel.
Last week I modded my coop for the...
I just hatched 3 goslings. Gosling number 1 hatched a week ago, he’s cute, a little nibbly, but nothing crazy. Gosling number 3 just hatched and seem to be on the same developmental timeline as gosling number 1.
But omg gosling number 2…?
Gosling number 2 is a bitey little terror, she bites...
I got the 10 bantam pullet pack from cackle, they are soooo tiny and cute and I’m absolutely in love! I think I have a general idea of the breeds, not really sure about the colors on the possible cochins though, help!
The possible breeds are:
Buff Brahma
Dominique
Barred Rock
Rhode Island Red...
I ordered 10 bantam hens from cackle that will be arriving friday or saturday, I also currently have a broody bantam. I’m wondering whether it would be wise to give them to my banty… My last shipment was in February and it wasnt a good experience. I lost half the chicks because they were very...
I *think* Chinese goose… they’re white with red bills [shrugs]. A week ago I got six of these eggs from a friends whose goose hatched a few and abandoned the rest. I have a tiny bantam chicken sitting on the three that ended up being viable.
Today I noticed that the egg that had the most...
I saw a qtip dispenser being sold as a bird feeder and just had to try it out myself, I love how cute it is!
I have larger feeders, but this seems to work great for the first week or so for a small brood.
Nothing fancy, I just wanted to share my messy run 😂 Honestly I’m surprised it’s lasted this long, 3 years and this ugly ebay purchase is still holding up.
The run floor was getting a little too compact for my liking, so with the past few days of warmish weather, I finally got around to putting...
I bought amberlinks along with leg horns and though I picked out the leghorns. Now I’m not so sure.
Her feathers are pure white, no cream flecks anywhere, but that comb has been suspiciously small….

It’s been a few years since I brooded chicks myself. I’ve noticed that my 2.5 week olds never really get the full crops my first batch of chicks had. Most of the time they feel pretty empty. despite this they’re all super energetic (as chicks should be?).
They have both mash and dry food...
