Looks like a rose comb Nankins in a similar color as the btb Jap. Her body shape, leg color and comb type don’t look correct to be a Japanese.
This is my btb pullet from Ideal stock at a few months old.
They’ve not done well to be honest. On the coldest nights they’ve slept in a closet or near the supplemental heat I’ve provided. The tips of their combs are dark but healing, as are the edges of their wattles.
Baby Japs in the incubator at day 8, probably 6 or 7 of them by my best guess on egg IDs of btw, btb, or black combos. So when do yours hatch out? Seems most Bantams finish cooking at day 19/20 by my obsessive research while I count down the days.
My boys are about 7/8 months old and just have small spur nubs. I suspect they will get longer after spring and full maturity, and I’ll have them trimmed up. But they also had spur buds, from roughly a few months old. It’s odd yours wouldn’t.
It was a good special, I paid around $40 and that included shipping. Just have to watch for their ads, otherwise it would have been about $75 at regular price.
I don’t have any mottled birds, only btw, btb and black. I’m tempted to order some mottled chicks from Ideal Poultry but my last order was insanely heavy on male bantam chicks, 17 of 20 were male. But they are of very nice quality, at least in my opinion. So if you do decide on day olds instead...
Mine are very good at roosting, even my shortest legged pullets and big tailed boys. They struggled a little when they were very small, though they were my first to try to roost. But as full grown birds they have no problems with getting about 3+ feet off the floor to the top bar.
As for rain...
That is unusual, you might want to share your full experience and set up on the big incubation thread, someone there who maybe using the same tools might have better insight. Maybe something is happening at lock down, either shrinkwrapping or growing too large to turn in the egg and pip.
The fatal gene typically only happens when mating two short legged Japs together and 25% of those chicks won’t survive to hatch. The breeding of a short leg to a longer legged one will not result in this, but will yield more long legged chicks than desired.
So it should not be a factor with...
Broke down and brought both my cockerels inside tonight and set them up in a closet. It’s so cold, and despite everything I’ve tried they are showing signs of frost bite on their combs and wattles. Hoping that after a few nights out of the cold they will recover, I’ll put them back at dawn with...
Yes please, though my birds are nothing compared to these gorgeous creatures, I doubt it would be a fair trade. :love:love:love
— oh dear, just saw how old that post was, oops!!
I have been able to distinguish males from less then 6 weeks old. They really start to grow those big combs early and put on huge tail growth. Got any pictures?
This is my 5 month old buff pair—
So my poor btw cockerel nicked the tail end of his big comb and got blood everywhere. He’s soaked his hackles and face, not to mention the coop. Any tips on getting the stains out of his white feathers? A damp rag got a good deal off, but he still looks terrible with it streaked all over and...
