This thread has definitely given me a different perspective on what to expect by trying to sell or trade these roosters. I'm still torn on when to rehome them because they're still very juvenile, but at the same time our broody hen just hatched some chicks so keeping the Roos longer will be even...
I'm happy to report that 7 chicks have hatched but she's still sitting on more. We have food & water set nearby (separate from the rest of the flock) for her and the babies.
I'm guessing that, because they're not all hatching at the exact same time, that she's "realizing" they're not duds. That...
Ah, that makes sense about thinking they're duds. These eggs are not all laid by her, but she/s the only broody one so we relocated the other layers and just let her sit on these eggs.
When she left the nest during the last hatch, some of these eggs were only a day or so away from hatching. If...
I have 2 hen-raised Barred Rock roos -- about 4 months old -- that I need to sell/trade. We already have a big rooster and do not need anymore for our small flock. When would be the best time to sell/trade them? Should I wait a couple more months or would it make any difference?
My goal...
This is the 2nd time this year that our broody Brown Cochin has hatched eggs. We've been letting her sit on some eggs that we didn't collect... just because. :) (We have plenty of eggs for our own needs!) Last time she hatched eggs -- about 3 months ago -- she hatched 4 out of 7/8 eggs and no...
Right now she's been sitting on the eggs separately from the coop and the rest of the flock but that doesn't mean they won't try to eat it! I think I have a set up in mind that will keep the rest of the flock away, I just wasn't sure if they even needed something.
Off to the feed store!
You know the saying, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you."
Well apparently a previous rooster (that I also hand raised) didn't understand that concept.
Best Christmas dinner we ever had...
We had to be out of town for a couple of weeks this month, so we just let our broody hen sit on her eggs instead of collecting like we normally do. Sure enough, we have some brand new chicks today and will probably have more as she's still sitting on some eggs.
My question is, should I get some...
I put a little nesting box with her eggs in the corner of the coop just for her, and also grabbed some of the leaves and feathers from the spot she was nesting in. The eggs were cold this morning so i can probably assume she didn't sit on them last night (candled yesterday; no signs of life) and...
It's funny you mention swapping out with newly hatched chicks because I mentioned to my husband the possibility of doing this if her eggs aren't viable.
During the time that we have NOTICED, she been broody for about a week or so. But she had 15+ eggs underneath her so she's been laying since...
We suspected one of our hens had gone broody when she would disappear all day but would always return for breakfast (meaning a predator hasn't gotten her). We finally found her in a well hidden spot amongst the blackberry bushes behind our backyard fence facing the remainder of our couple acres...
Well, I guess I'll have to get a photo later with my telephoto lens. The girls were beating on him a bit and chased him into my blackberry bushes. At least he can relax in there for now, since they don't care too much about going in there!
Jeez, girls! Haha
Thanks for reposting the photo. My mobile doesn't give me a whole lot of options when trying to post a photo. I'm going outside to try and get a photo of him standing tall.
I adopted a 6-month-old rooster from a lady in town that had one too many roosters. She said he is a Wyandotte mix, but I wanted to see if that seems right based on his photo.
Thanks in advance!

I can't but wonder about the enforcement of the "rules" of the HOA as well. If you are not required to pay into it, as an owner, it seems like they created it just to keep out people they don't like and not let disturbances get out of hand, you know? But in the case of a courteous neighbor who...
I dont have anything to add, sorry. (I'm still what some might call a newbie. *lol*)
But I must say that I just LOVE the pumpkin-orange colored chicken. Look like a little Halloween chicken!
