That's really bizarre, did the liquid have an odor? Maybe he has an infection in his mouth? I would treat it as a generic infectionand start him on a course of terramycin.
If someone was laying white eggs, that brown bird has to be a hen (erm, pullet ). But with white earlobes, I dont think she's a RIR. Do you think maybe you got some of McMurrays Avian Encephalomyelitis chicks?
I know how tough it is to be without work. However, oil needs to be low enough for the rest of us to survive the winter up here in Maine. I would like to see it go a bit lower still, but I can deal with $2 a gallon.
I just love that picture in your avitar. You have a broody now?? I only have two girls laying, and I don't think they are fertile. You know the rooster hasn't been working lately.
I have some millies from Ralph, you don't have to worry about vulture hocks... they will grow out of it. I have had cochins (not Ralphs, I got those in May) for many years, and the little ones always look like they have vulture hocks. I am getting some with what appears to be a slight wry tail...
I strongly recommend you find a local chicken club and discuss coops with them. The reason being- what BYC experts recommend (I have not read ANY of the previous comments, and I am not talking about anyone in particular) is not what works in my area. It is a great guideline, but you should look...
Im sorry about my lousy birds, 77horses. I cant keep those freeloading wild birds out of their feeder. I also recommend ivomec.
I use Ivomec on my adults, it's great, it kills all sorts of lice and some types of worms too (esp those gross long white ones). It is a very easy way to eliminate...
The body type of a cochin is very different. The legs are farther apart and they walk funny, they have much more 'fluff', especially above the saddle area, their tail feathers are limp, they are short and rounded. They have a lot more feathers on their legs. A good cochin looks like a pompom...
Oh well you are really pushing the chickens. It might be too cold to ship little chicks right now...but I was going to try to get 15 black chicks (actually I want 7 black pullets to go with that nice little cockerel chick I posted a picture of on Grampa Steve's Yahoo group- the one Alan said had...
Those are beautiful, I love the brown red! I have plenty of awesome roos, though- and am lacking girls to go with them. *sigh* I hope Nancy Utterback answers my desperate emails for little black chicks
I think she was saying that in her first post, she asked people to refrain from "death to the dog and chicken" posts. Some of us don't feel that a chickens quality of life would be ruined by lack of wings. How about silkies that cant fly up to roost? How about birds who live in wire bottom cages...
How about you cut a long rubber band in half and just tie it tight? That should have the same effect as the rubber band, without having to go over the wing feathers. She should be fine without wings, though a bit colder than the other chickens. I will bet she develops arnold swartzaneger legs...
