At my house we grow amaranth for eating and the chickens enjoy eating them too. Each morning I cut the mature leaves and mix with their feed. They love it. Lots of vitamins and minerals like vitamin A & C, iron, calcium, fiber and phosphorous. http://www.foragingtexas.com/2008/08/amarath_20.html
I use the deep litter method. I take water used to clean chicken feeders and waterers. I find it encourages composting and brings in bugs for the girls to snack on in the mornings
From the animal shelter, it posted a sign that said all roosters have to be cooped 35 feet away from all dwellings, that includes your house and all your neighbor's dwellings. Hens, no rule posted. Just as long as your neighbor's don't mind
Do give your chickens some sun be in under shelter or not. Natural sunlight, bugs, lots of leaves and veggies of different colors will give you a more intense yolk color. If they can't free range, harvest bugs for them.
For a month or so before my hen first laid eggs, she was VERY grouchy, bawking all the time and refuses to let me pet her. . She would hang out in the nesting box I made for her a good month and a half before laying first egg.
I have a young hen who has been laying since Feb. 24 2013. She's top of the pecking order too and is a RIR. I've seen her lay shell-less eggs. They're like a sac with egg whites and yolk. Yesterday I found a small sac with very little whites and no yolk (a first from her) She lays 7 days a week...
My RIR hen is so loud but no noise complaint from any neighbors yet. She paces around "bawk-bawk-bawk!" noise for a good half an hour before sitting down to lay an egg. I adopted 2 American Game fowl laying hens a few weeks ago. They are great if you don't want noise. They make very...
Jarretfarm, you can soak your chick's toes in warm water. Make sure water is warm and not hot or it will burn your chicks. Scrub the toes with a soft toothbrush in water. Sometimes I just let the chicks stand in shallow warm water until it all comes off. Maybe your chicks need more space that...
Red Barn in Tarzana, Kahoots in Chatsworth and Cooper's Hardware in Sylmar all carry baby chicks. Hope this helps. I found a facebook page of chicken people called California Poultry People. Good network
Hi Kekko! wow sounds like you have a great flock going. I recently found out my local animal shelter had 2 juvenile hens up for adoption. I went to adopt the hens. Los Angeles county animal rescue found them in cock fighting rings. First day after adopting the two, one of the new hen laid an...
