Doesn't the Eastern side warm up quicker? As always, keeping our fingers and toes crossed for good tomato weather. Have you ever had volunteer tomatoes? One year I let a mysterious couple grow, and they ended up being grape tomatoes. Must've been in the compost pile. I planted zucchini under...
Haven't been here for awhile. Have 16 pullets that are 11.5 weeks old. 5 each of Dominant Coppers ( BCM x PR), Easter Eggers, and 6 Novogen white.
Did a major battle with coop mites. Been struggling with this since discovering them back in November. Removed the coop panels and found a...
Well, possums do keep ticks under control, but also have been known to eat eggs, and birds. They are mean when cornered, have sharp teeth. A friend once told me a story of one which had gotten into her coop, and she had to fight it with a shovel. Anyway, hope you'll find a way to keep it out.
The rain is a good thing to have. I remember one dry April noticing my rhody leaves looking folded, and then realized it had not rained in quite awhile and had to actually water plants then.
It is also wonderful for the seeds and taters I'd just planted.
This year I bought chicks from Jenks Hatchery in Oregon, so they got here overnight. I have 6 leghorns in the mix, hopefully they stay healthy. I think TSC gets theirs from one hatchery, so it's not TSC's fault. Maybe a breed genetic issue?
Update: This morning I parked Ginger on her pad, and put her food dish under her head. She was able to eat on her own. Had her drink some, then off to church for a few hours. She seemed to be ok when I returned, but had scooted herself off the mat. Made her a sling, which she spent some time in...
Last year invested in a 3 gallon one, but for me, it was very clumsy and awkward to fill and turn back over. Decided to just put the heater portion under the nipple bucket, and it worked out better. It also came with a 3 year warranty from TSC.
Oh, the wind was crazy, too! Cleared up by late morning so we let the kids out.
Looked at the Old Farmer's Almanac forecast, and says we will have a cool and dry winter, unlike most of the interior US which will have more snow.
Here's a story about these. This past year, I bought 6 faux eggs to thwart my egg eater. Recently, I took these out of the boxes, and threw 4 of them on the grass for the rain to wash off, as they were poopy, and left 2 in another nesting box. The damages were on the ones that were in the grass...
Thanks. Have you thought to sell them? You sure have a lot extra, well, this year for sure. Next year the molt and slow down occurs. They keep for a few months if in an airtight container, refrigerated. I used to put my dozens straight in a plastic bag and tie it shut, back when I was buying them.
Haven't been here in awhile. Anyway, sometimes I lose this thread. Had 5 hens killed this past Thursday in the run that we thought was secure. DH fixed the weak spot in the fencing that we think the coons or other critter got in. I am nursing an injured one who was still breathing when we found...
