Can anyone in CT adopt a male Pekin?

Hi. A good friend of mine rescued a beautiful full-grown male Pekin from a meat auction I had told her that I would take in another female but no more males, as I have 5 females and 2 males already. She doesn't know much about ducks and was told by someone from the Dept of Agriculture at the...

Will a hawk carry away a RIR?

Oh I am SO RELIEVED!!! I just saw Rosie by the entrance of the coop! She had been hiding very well all this time!! So I only lost Maggie this week to the hawk - which is bad enough, but I thought that I had lost Rosie too. Not a feather out of place. Whew!

Will a hawk carry away a RIR?

I know that I have some red-tailed hawks that have been around for years. Last Wednesday, my husband came home to a hawk in our yard trying to get one of our RIRs. He scared the hawk away, but our Maggie suffered a broken neck and only lived for about an hour I read several posts and kept my...

hawk ate one of my girls - help!!!!!!

A red-tailed hawk just got my Maggie today She was a RIR. My DH came home from work and scared the hawk away. It was too late to save her. I am going to have my DH string up some CDs if he gets home from work when it's still light out (I get home after dark). I have 10 chickens and 8...

    Candling eggs help!

Thank you! We will get a better flashlight, wait a few more days and do it when it is completely dark (it wasn't totally dark when we did it). Keeping my fingers crossed!

    Candling eggs help!

Hi, We have our first broody hen and are very excited. We just moved her into a new, protected brooder box that is on the ground tonight. We also candled the eggs, which are 5 days old. We didn't see anything with 7 of these eggs. We could not see through our EE egg (green - too dark?). My...

Thank you so much, Chickie Mama di! I can't wait! We're moving mama into a box in a dog crate in the coop tomorrow - so hopefully nobody will fall out when they're hatched (she's still in the nesting box on the wall). We're going to candle them at the same time - very exciting! What is...

    CT Chicken Stock. Summer 2009

Thank you. I had a feeling. So I would use a non-medicated chick starter food? Unfortunately, my feed store does not offer organic chick starter (or grower) food - they only offer the organic layer pellets, which is what I use. Should I give her chick starter food now? I heard that it's...

    CT Chicken Stock. Summer 2009

OK, I have something to post. One of my Buff Orphingtons has gone broody! We are excited, and a little nervous. We're still learning about how to take care of chickens and this is the very first time one of our hens went broody (they are only a year old). She has been sitting on 5 eggs since...

Should I leave my broody hen in coop w/other hens

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks. I keep checking to catch a time when she is off the nest... I have no idea how many eggs are under her. There is no way I am sticking my hand in that box! In general, what percentage of eggs usually hatch? How many eggs would be too much for a Buff...

Should I leave my broody hen in coop w/other hens

Hi, I'm new at this as well. My chickens are 15 months old and I believe that one of my Buff Orphingtons is broody. I noticed several days ago that she would not leave the nesting box for the entire day and when I went near it to gather other eggs, she growled at me. But she did roost with...

    CT Chicken Stock. Summer 2009

Oh, I'm really wishing I had a bater right now! We are so in love with our 2 little ducklings we got at the Chickenstock and would love to get a few more! They are so very cute and a whole lotta fun - even more than the chickens! They are following me around the yard now -- I love it! I'm...
