I was inspired by Derp to get my own Favs some time ago, Bantams as all our chickens are Bantams, and found some from a breeder in Wisconsin. We nearly lost one of the boys right away when my son's dog got a hold of him at 3 days old. He felt limp and nearly lifeless, but I gave him...
I put five various eggs under my persistently broody splash silkie and two hatched so far, one Sultan and one silkie. Still have a few to go. This was our first broody hatch so it's exciting!
I have five eggs under a broody silkie, a Sultan egg, couple of Silkies, and Silkie/Polish mix. Poor Marshmallow has been broody half her life & has never gotten to hatch anything so this is a first for both of us.
Thanks, I'll try trimming them a bit. I wouldn't want to do anything to hurt him, and have no idea how long the quicks are, so guess I'll try a little at a time. Thanks for the flour idea. I'm mainly kind of worried about him getting them caught on something now that they are like complete...
I have a little rooster (Cochin frizzle) that, even though he is nearly 2 yrs old, never really grew and never learned to "perch" with his feet. He has always slept in a nesting box and we give him solid blocks to get up on in his run so he can be "large and in charge" because he can't get on...
Seems no matter what the situation, there is always something waiting to eat our birds! We live in the middle of a farm and while we usually have no problems with large ground predators due to the lack of cover, we have hawks that come and sit right on our pens and scream like a banshee (a...
Thanks - he seems to be improving quickly and can take a few steps on his own now and is no longer flopping back and forth and trying to hold himself up with his wings, so I am very hopeful. What an improvement from last night when he was on his side flopping around. He is a resilient little guy.
I got my first bantam Favorelle chicks last week, and if he lives, one of them might be "special". He got injured last night by my son's dog. He is getting a lot of special attention right now and doesn't seem to have any external injuries, but cannot stand on his own, although he is stronger...
My frizzle Cochin roo, Freddy, is king of his coop but smaller than all of his hens. They are all Bantams, but he just never grew much and all his girls are a lot bigger than he is, but he doesn't care. He can't get up on any of the roosts with his tiny useless frizzle wings, but discovered...
I have some bantam chicks just about 10-12 days old and my son's dog (Eskimo) got into the laundry room last night and knocked one of them around a bit. (This dog is making me nuts - son moved back home, brought dog) I don't see any injuries, both legs and wings move and do not look broken...
My frizzles do the same thing. My poor little roo looked gorgeous all winter and now he is back to looking like Frankenfrizzle again. I give them game bird feed mixed with their regular feed, they seem to need a little extra to get those frizzle feathers back.
So excited, i am getting my own "little Derps" this week - seven bantam Salmon Favorelles left their home in Wisconsin today and are on their way to my home in KY. Of course, now I will worry about them til they get here. At least the weather is good and not too hot.

We recently had a bout of cocci in the flock that may have actually been a biosecurity issue unwittingly brought by a visitor. Anyway, we treated with amprolium, all survived and everyone seems to be fine now and egg production is picking up. My question is, how long after we discontinued the...
I love them! I have three Buff Brahma Bantams (Milly, Tilly, and Lily) and they are very sweet girls and they lay some of the biggest eggs of all my Bantams, too.
Sebrights are interesting creatures, aren't they? I have a Silver and a Golden. Mine quit laying for the winter and have just now started up again. Your little Silver might be broody. My Silver (Peepermint Patti) went broody but gave it up from boredom after about three days - it's not most...
Yes, you probably need some more hens so your rooster can 'spread the love' a bit. Can you separate your Brahma out for awhile and give her a break/time to heal (or remove the rooster for a bit)? Like in a 'hospital/isolation cage' or something?
