I have 1 easter egger and 5 bared rocks. Last fall they all stopped laying do to molt and short daylight. Now they all are laying again but 1 bared rock is laying a white egg, I don't see any problems with any chicken and eggs are fine also. Easter egger lays a green egg almost daily, so I know...
This Rooster Pheasant has been hanging around my hens run the last few days. He sure seems like he wants to join the flock, not sure he is feeling a little frisky or hungry. The girls don't seem to care much for him, they seem to hide in the coop after he hangs around. Anyone else have this happen?
Well bird flu is at our local chicken farms again. The one farm is just over 2 miles from us and their fields are just a 1/4 mile from us where they spread some manure and egg wash liquid. I am hoping they don't bury the dead chickens there. I got through the last outbreak of the bird flu okay...
1 of my Barred Rocks started laying eggs that are somewhat flat, it is like if you dropped a dough ball its still roundish but flattened. I noticed those eggs being very thin shelled. I was feeding All-flock but since the thin shells on those eggs I feed 50/50 layer and all-flock and always have...
Just seen on the scanner of a chicken coop on fire 20' from the house. With these cold temps we are having be careful with the heat lamps/ heaters. :thumbsup
Wednesday I was wondering why my girls were hanging out in the coop since during the day they are out in the run usually. Yesterday I get in from my morning deer hunt and still no chickens out in the run, so I go and check on them and see 5 chickens in 3 nesting boxes and 2 on the roost. When I...
1 of my Barred Rocks is broody I believe, I never see her out in the run eating or drinking, the coop does have food and water. Since I have a roll out nest box she only ever has 1 egg under her and when she gets up that one rolls out. My ? is should I do anything or just let her be?
I have 3 nesting boxes and 7 hens, this morning one hen just having a melt down (very vocal), I went to investigate and 2 boxes had 2 hens and the 3rd had one and she was so upset she was being mean to the 7th hen that was just a by-stander. Funny times.
Easter egger laid another huge egg, she has reproductive problems and I only get a egg from her about every 2 weeks but it's always huge. The other eggs are from Barred Rocks and green from a easter egger.
I posted some time ago how my dad helped in getting the Trumpeters re-introduced in the wild by raising them and sending them to many states around the country. Well Mom passed 2 weeks ago and she loved working with the swans as much as dad did taking care of the little ones during the day while...
I have been giving my easter egger (poor girl) a tablet for the past 7 days and today she laid another really big egg. She seemed to handle it better this time but I think she is still having some discharge, not sure if it is lash egg stuff or what, the other girls are finding something and...
My 10 month old easter egger has had laying issues since the 1st egg. The 1st 2 were double yolkier and then laid a few shell less eggs, and from there it went to real big eggs. I always knew when she was about to lay or did lay because she would walk funny. She has not laid for a couple months...
My wife called me up from the basement a bit ago because a young eagle sitting in a tree watching the chickens in the run. The girls did hide under the coop and then the eagle flew away. :clap
I went down to give the girls some water this morning and my door was not open but it is -13F. My door is home made with solar panel, solar controller, timer and actuator with an RV battery for power. This is the coldest day since using it and it's 1st failure. My ? is does your door work in...
I trap a few coyotes every year to keep them from killing fawns in the spring and now that I have chickens it's nice to thin them out some. This was a pair caught in cable restraints behind my house last night.
Watching the wheel last night and there was a woman from Texas (I think) on that said she had a pot belly pig , a couple turkeys and 13 chickens, wondering if she is a BYC member. She must love her pig and birds to mention them on a game show.:clap
I give my hens (7) a single serving size yogurt container of scratch in the late afternoon since I here corn creates heat in them for these long cold winter nights. Now I have 2 that must be going through a soft molt since the 2 lost feathers on the back of there neck and tail feathers ( i see...
Feeding the girls this afternoon I noticed either fox or fisher cat tracks in the mud. If I get some pictures and its fox I will set a trap for it, I already have snares out for coyote but try avoid catching fox until they stalk my girls :). We cant trap fisher here, and I have only seen tracks...
