What do you use to cover your run in the winter to prevent mud mess?

It has been raining like crazy in Kentucky and my coop run has become a muddy mess. What materials do you use to prevent this? Straw? Mulch? Thanks!

maybe an egg broken inside her? What do I do?

My black Australorp may have an egg broken inside her. How can you tell? And if so, what do you do? She passed a bit of broken yoke in the nest around 1 p.m. There wasn't much there. I didn't see any shell.

    hen seems sick; not eating

My 6 month old black Australorp wouldn't get off the nest this afternoon and after I scooted her off of it I saw some egg yolk and egg white - not enough for an entire egg. I didn't see any shell. She is out with the other hens now but is just standing there and when I offered them treats she...

building a run; do I need to put wire down into the ground and if so..

Hi Fellow Chicken Lovers, I have decided to build a 6 ft tall run with hardware cloth. That decision was settled by other posts! I am going to have treated 2x4's along the ground and the wire will be attached to the 2x4's. What predators might dig under this? How do I prevent it? Thanks!

my young hen is making a habit of laying shell less eggs; help!

My speckled sussex began laying eggs in August. She was never as regular as my other two hens and her eggs didn't get larger as quickly as my other hen's eggs. She was laying maybe 3 or 4 eggs a week for about a month. In September she stopped laying and then one morning I found two shell...

sunflower seed with shell; good for chickens?

I recently heard a talk about sunflower seeds being good for a chicken's feathers. I notice that mine eat them whole, not like a cardinal or other bird, which cracks it and just eats the seed. I'm assuming this is ok and that it all just gets ground up in their intestinal system. Anybody know...

what kind of wire is best for a chicken run?

I am getting ready to build a new run for my 5 month old hens. My other one was temporary and since a neighbor's cat has discovered my hens I need one with a top on it. What type of wire is best? How large should it be? It will need to attach to my hen house, which is the bottom portion of a...

shell-less eggs; should I be concerned?

This morning I woke up and found two shell-less egg yokes under the perch. My young hen who started laying and then stopped for 5 days must have "dropped" these during the night. Anyone else had this experience? I put out plenty of oyster shell and old egg shells; what causes this? Should I...

    started laying then stopped (???)

Hi, I have three chickens; one black Australorp, one specked Sussex and one Golden Comet. The Golden and Australorp started laying in early August and are now laying daily. Their eggs are full sized now. The Sussex started laying about a week after them, but still isn't laying daily and her...

chickens flying over my 4-5 ft. fence

I just put together a fence (for the chicken run) made of the plastic you often see at construction sights. First the hens went under it, so I bought tent pegs and so far that has worked. Then my feistiest hen flew up and over the fence. I think she landed on the top of it first, then jumped...

Loud mouthed hen in the city

I have a black Australorp that is just starting to lay eggs. She is beautiful! However, she is very noisy and we live in the city. I have neighbors all around and I'm afraid they are going to complain. I have two other hens and all of them get along very well. If I have to get rid of her...

pic of my coop; can I use wire instead of total enclosure?

Well, I hope this works! It looks like my pic might not be upright. Here is a pic of my coop. I used hardware cloth to cover open spaces and nailed them securely with u shaped nails. Will this keep raccoons and possums out? I have 3 hens; a black Australorp, a speckled Sussex and a Golden...

total enclosure or wire enclosure for coop

I am in the process of making a larger coop out of the bottom of a playhouse. We put in a wooden floor and screened the entire inside of the enclosure with hardware cloth. We used the u shaped type nails to attach the cloth all around. There are boards all around with 1-2 inch spaces in...
