Thought this was a interesting looking chick that hatched today. Roosters I have are a grey silkie and a old english bantam, was pretty sure this egg was from a pure breed silkie, but I have a cochin hen and a few cochin silkie mix hens and a couple serama brassy black hens.
When should I move a hen with her chicks to the coop when the broody hen was moved inside to finish the hatch? Chickens are free range 100% of the time so the coop was built for nightime housing only. Though off one nest box I temporarly caged it in with the top open so the babies cannot...
I have a bantam, that had a hidden nest in my neighbors barn. Went missimg on the 5th and Found 12th of march. The eggs were on a slanted floor rolling all over the place plus 14 eggs wouldnt even fit under her. Put her and eggs in a box and relocated. Seemed succesful but next morning she...
It' s still shaking the egg alot but no chirping I can hear. I think it' been 24 hours since this strange looking pip.
For back story at day 13 there was a power outage and the temp dropped to 79 deg.
I didn't turn them as much as I should have and lost track of the days and locked them...
I have 20 chickens. Now that they are getting older I am free ranging them more and more and in about a month or 2 they will free range 100% of the time only going in the coop to sleep at night. Is there math to find out how much addition feed they will need? They have a good 1.2 -1.8 acres...
I currently have two laying hens and neglected to collect the eggs for a couple of days and sure enough the silkie went broody. I removed the eggs, (while she destroyed my hand) and took her off the nest. She doesn't seem to mind that no eggs are there. She immediately goes back to the nest...
Sorry for the double post.
this guy was hatched at 7:30AM this morning. Dont know if this is a unabsorbed yolk sack or something more serious. Little guy seems to be fine other wise. I should add that it pipped at 5AM and was hatched by 7:30AM which seems really fast but that is just my...

I got it from Murray McMurray so it defiantly should be a pure breed. However it is not one I ordered so it is most likely my free rare chick they gave me.
Just want to brag a bit. First time hatching. It started when my favorite rooster (the one in my avatar pic) was killed by a dog and hours after I decided to Incubate a few of the eggs I thought he probably fertilized. The hen was a white silkie.
Also I should add they were pullet eggs...
Today is lockdown day and I need to get the humidity up to 65% in my LG incubator. I have filled all the resivors, added a folded water saturated rag, and a regular size bowl with a sponge. It will not budge past 51%. I must be doing something wrong? In the house the humidity is 25-30%
I have a Acu-Rite 00891W3 that has a sensor probe to measure outside temp.
I have mounted the outside sensor at egg height in the center of my LG still air incubator. I have also put the unit itself inside the incubator to keep a eye on the humidity (the outside probe does not measure...
3 eggs went into the incubator at the same time. Then I decided to add on the day after and then another as my hen laid them.
So, 3 eggs are all on time 1 egg will be going into lockdown a day early which I don't think is a big deal but the other egg will be 2 days early.
Any Thoughts?
Excited about my order of chicks arriving on the 22nd. Here is what I am getting:
5 SULTANS
3 RHODE ISLAND RED
3 W. C. BLACK POLISH
2 MILLE FLEUR BANTAMS
3 BLACK SILKIE BANTAMS
3 BLUE SILKIE BANTAMS
3 GOLDEN POLISH
3 SILVER POLISH
Also I have 8 white Silkie eggs in the incubator that should...
In a still air incubator I have a digital thermometer that reads indoor temp and has a sensor that reads outdoor temp which I also have mounted inside the incubator. The outdoor temp is reading 99 but the indoor temp is reading 103. I put another digital thermometer inside the incubator and it...
In the process of hatching pullet eggs. To be specific from a 5 month old Silkie hen . She has been laying for a few weeks and her eggs have no issues. Perfectly shaped and tasty may I add. Just a bit smaller than then average egg. I decided to incubate 8 of the eggs. I want to here form...
I am incubating for the first time and had nothing but temp issues for the first 3 or 4 days. If you had had successful hatches with crazy temp spikes or decreases I would like to hear about it.
I made a homemade still air incubator out of a Styrofoam cooler and 15 watt light bulb. I know now i did not wait long enough to test it before I put the eggs in. To excited I guess. The first 1 -3 days I had nothing but temp issues going from 97 to even 106 for short periods. I have finally...
