Hand-crocheted chicks made from 100% acrylic yarn, stuffed with new polyfill fiber. Each chick can be made to represent a certain breed. Shown is a White Crested Black Polish. Chicks can also be made in the color of your choice.
Gorgeous, sweet White Orpington Rooster. Hatched 5/25/12. Just started crowing, not aggressive at all. I need to find him a home because I'm in a suburban neighborhood that doesn't allow roosters. He's a beauty. See for yourself:
Breeding pair of Light Sussex standard chickens - hatch date 5/25/12. The rooster is not aggressive and both are a good size with beautiful feathering. I need to rehome them ASAP. I can meet you halfway, within reason, of course.
When my chickens come out of the coop in the morning, they often chase each other. One will run after another one and then they will stop and fluff up their head and neck feathers. It seems to be a game - no one pecks or chases very far. They usually just run a few feet and stop. Is it a...
I have a 18 week old black sex link hen who was a rescue and the sole hen for about a month. I have 3 chicks who I am slowly introducing, and added a 16 week old Rhode Island Red hen about a week ago. The two older hens were getting along fine because it was clear that the BSL was boss...
Just wanted to share my experience (my 1st) with moving chicks out to the coop.
I'm in NY and the temps are down to about 50 degrees at night. I have 4 week old chicks that were brooding in a rubbermaid box in a room off my bedroom. There are 3 chicks - Australorp, Barred Rock and Golden...
I am happy to report that my errant hen, Gladys the tree-sleeper, was heading up to roost IN THE COOP when I came home from work today. Two separate 3-day lockdowns did the trick. Everyone was so great with support and suggestions!
Yesterday she headed toward the tree but I guided her toward...
I've shared a couple of posts on here about how my rescue hen, Gladys, was sleeping in a tree and would have to be lured to the coop to sleep.
I tried a lockdown for three days with no luck. So I locked her up for another three days. I let her out yesterday afternoon. After free ranging for...
I turned the light off on the "brooder" last night and tonight to give the babies (3 weeks old) a taste of night. It's plenty warm enough in there and I think they need to have a break from the constant light. They did great. Didn't even huddle together. Any thoughts on that? Is it a good...
Gladys spent 3 days in solitary confinement last week to try to break her tree-sleeping habit. She was reprieved on Saturday, spent the day free-ranging in the yard and then promptly headed back to the tree at 4pm.
Following the suggestions of many, I promptly revoked her bail and put her back...
After 3 days in lockup, Gladys is coming out on probation this morning. I'm going to let her free range all day and then, hopefully, she'll head to the coop at dusk tonight.
Keep your fingers crossed that the magic tree-sleeping cure worked.
We're working on expanding the run for our chickens and Gladys, the 14 week old, has been pecking at our clothes while we're out there working. Particularly during hammering. It's a riot. It's like she wants to help. And she must approve of the workmanship because she's alreading wandering...
Although we had a couple of not-so-pleasant scenes about going into the coop at night, Gladys seems resigned to the process. In the last 8 or so days, she's only been in the tree overnight once. I'm hoping if we are consistent about cooping her at night, she'll eventually develop the habit...
Took the chicks out in the 82 degree weather today. Too cute to see these three little peeps out on the big lawn.
I'm such a nervous mommy though, I took them in after about 10 minutes!
My chicks (1 BR, 1 Australorp and 1 Golden Comet) are 2 weeks old today. I can't believe how much they've changed!!
Here are pics of their new feathers
For their birthday, I made a little perch in their brooding box
It's official. I've lost my mind...
My 13 week (or so) Black Star rescue has a habit of roosting overnight in a tree in my yard. I've been intercepting her in the afternoons and luring her into her coop to keep her safe at night. I was hoping she'd get used to the idea, but now she's trying to outmaneuver me. One afternoon she...
My Black Star, Gladys, is approximately 12 weeks old (I'm guessing - she was a rescue). I haven't been expecting any "laying" behavior yet, but last week she put up this whole squawking fit which we figured was her just looking for me. Then today she spent a lot of time sitting in the nesting...
I posted a question about my Black Star 12 week old pullet flying up into a tree to roost at night. I'm also worried about her flying over the fence into my (hostile) neighbor's yard.
A couple of people suggested I consider clipping her wings to keep her grounded. I thought I'd ask for some...
