Today I took home my first chicken. She is from the Nature Center that I work at. My mom and our friend and I went to pick her up. I held her in the car as we drove to my neighbor's house - she already has a coop and we were gonna keep my chicken there for a while. So when we put her in, my...
Ok, I know you don't need to bathe a chicken, but I'm asking this just in case I do. When you wash chickens, do you use soap or shampoo? Or do you just rinse them with water? Also, do you use any kind of washcloth or just your hands?
Thanks!
Ok, I work at a nature center and they have a bunch of ugly, mean, bald chickens. Now that it's spring, they're gonna get rid of the big chickens and hatch chicks.
1/2 of the chickens they sell are going to other farms because they still lay a lot of eggs. The other 1/2 is going to be eaten...
Is there a feed store near Stamford CT? I want to be able to go and pick out my chicks since I'm only getting 3. I don't want to ship them or anything. So does anyone know where there is a feed store that I can get sexed, baby chicks? Anywhere near Stamford CT??
Help is appreciated!
I am going to get three standard-sized chicks. I have a whole coop/run planned in my head - but before I build it I need to check with you guys!
Does this sound good:
4 by 3 ft. hen house- 4 square feet per bird.
4 by 4.5 ft. run- 6 square feet per bird.
Also, how much space should each chicken...
I'm sooo excited because my neighbor is getting chicks on May 4!! I really want only 3 little chicks. But...my mom isn't completely convinced. She keeps saying: "Oh, your excited about getting chicks - that will live down the street." Grrrr! My dad is all for the idea, he wants the poop!
So...
this is kind of a wierd question. Do chickens go in "heat" like dogs do? Or do they just...uh..."do it" when the rooster wants too? And if they do go in heat, will the fact that I'm not going to get a rooster matter? Will they be angry or confused??
This just popped in my mind so I decided to...
I've read so many different answers for this. How much space does each chicken need in their coop and run? I've heard from 2 square feet per bird up to 10 square feet. Which one is right? I'm only getting 3 chickens, so how big should the coop and run be??
Thanks.
This isn't chicken related, but... My mom and I spent 2 hours yesterday and this morning picking up all the important things from our basement, which is flooded with 6 inches of water. UGG!! Sooo many things are ruined!! And of course this happened on the week that my dad and brother aren't...
Hey, I've been wondering. (Well actually my parents and I have been wondering.) I REALLY, REALLY want 3 chicks, but I don't know if I can handle it. I know almost every thing about chickens, but I don't want to distrubt my life too much. I already have a dog, a cat and 3 turtles. Also, I'm only...
can someone post a pic of a Silver Penciled Cochin Bantam Rooster if you have one?I want to see if he's the same breed as another rooster I know.
Thanks!!
I was just wondering, I live in Conneticut and I want to know if these breeds are good and which you would choose: Buff Orpington, Black Australorp or Silver Laced Wyandotte. Are they ok? Which breed is friendlier??
Thanks
I volunteer at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center every saturday from 9-12 with my friend. (Thats how I learned to love chickens!)
Anyway - there is a small bantam rooster who is old and lives in a small-ish rabbit hut and he doesn't have a pertch. Can he sleep ok at night without one...
Somethime in the very near future I'm going to get a few Buff Orpington chicks. If I keep the brooder in the garage, on the side farthest from the car, will it bother them when my dad takes his car in and out? Do they mind loud noises? I hope not, because that's the only place I can think of...
I can't believe I finally joined! I've been reading all the posts for about three months. I have tons of questions about chickens, but I know all the basics. This site is the best!
