What can cause a healthy hen to just die?

Our broody hen had been doing totally fine, sitting on eggs, running around like crazy when snacks were given though (just like the others!) etc, but one day this week she was just dead - in the run. She had been totally fine that morning. Her wings were covered in sand and dirt so it was as if...

    Deworming dose

So last time I put in more food than they could get through in a week so I used a much smaller bowl this time with the deworming powder...but apparently I've gone the other way. I put it in early Wednesday, and by tonight (Fri night), it's almost all gone -- so barely even lasted half a week...

    Do females ever attack?

One of our hens hatched her own egg and raised the chick, and a couple months ago, we introduced them back into the run with the other hens and our cockerel. Everyone is doing fine and getting along. The baby, who is very cute and doing really great, always had a 'deeper' voice than the others...

    What more can we do?

About two months ago, two new chickens we got came with some sort of respiratory disease. They were sneezing away, lethargic, and their eyes were sealing. One died within a couple days, and the other was so bad we had her put down at the vets. It didn't take long before one by one, our...

Stopping a chicken from being broody in winter?

One of ours is properly broody, in the egg box all day, no feathers on belly, etc. I was reading up on what to do to stop it and it all seems to involve separating her in the run so she isn't too comfortable, or ducking her in cold water. Now, those seem like decent methods during summer...

    Separating a chicken for treatment

I know many separate a chicken if they're a bit unwell and put them inside etc - but I read somewhere that it is good to separate it with one other one, so that she is not lonely. What is the best thing to do with this? Thanks!

How late is too late for sour crop?

I know it is not fatal if caught early. She's had it for about a week. Been treating (the usual, no food, acv, etc.) since Monday, so today is day three. Tonight is the first time she got a full dosage of the anti fungal medicine - I got my partner to help me who held her beak open. She's been...

    Sour crop treatment

So I have our sick chicken with apple cider vinegar in the water, and yogurt in the water. Not sure how much she is eating and drinking but I'm trying to force some into her with a syringe. All the vets around here don't seem to have any anti-fungals at all. So I am wondering if there are any...

    Is she ill?

One of our hens (10 weeks old) is acting a bit weird, but I don't know if she is ill or not. She is very frequently doing this odd head bobbing motion (while in place), a but like how a parrot would regurgitate - same sort of motion but going a bit further up and down, and instead of numerous...

Deep clean method for the run

We have wood chips on top of a layer of sand, and some metal grating at the bottom (to pretent any foxes or other animals from digging under to get to them!). In light of the fact that an earthen ground is the best, does this still count (given the sand and metal mesh)? Thanks!

    food and water

Just wondering - do you guys keep food and water in the coop as well for the chickens overnight, or just in the run with nothing inside when they are locked up overnight? Thanks!

    Being outside

Our bantam orpingtons don't have all their feathers yet (nearly there though it seems...they are quite big and chunky now!), they are hitting week 7 on Sunday. But today we put them outside as it is a rare nice and warm day (despite it being VERY windy!). They seem to be enjoying the run and...

Cold turkey switchover to grower pellets?

Bad timing has meant I've run out of chick pellets this evening and have given the chickens grower pellets. They are pecking away at it but seem a bit confused. It is hard to tell if they are actually managing to eat it though, as obviously it is quite a lot larger than the previous stuff they...

And how about this, is this ok as bedding?

The stuff we are using now isn't working so well -- but we have wood chips which we use for the parrots as well. This is the stuff we have: http://www.northernparrots.com/assorted-brands-natural-kiln-dried-beechwood-chips-no-8-coarse-prod662020a/ Would this be ok, or would it hurt the chicks'...

    Sawdust

We have week old chicks that are eating and drinking fine etc. Is using sawdust ok as a base? Thanks!

When do you remove the plaster holding the legs together

We put this on the chick yesterday that had splayed legs. He couldn't even really stand up yesterday (he just hatched yesterday morning---needed our help the poor weak thing!) but today, thank goodness, he is standing and even walking a bit! I know you are supposed to replace the plaster every...

    Straddle leg & heat

When you put on the plaster to help with the straddle leg issue (on a 1-2 day old chick), how do you then also make sure that it doesn't get too hot or too cold when you move it into the brooder? The chick we have in the brooder just now, who is thankfully doing fine, moves from under the bulb...

    Brooder temperature

I was reading in this forum about the temperatures the brooder is meant to be at eat week. We bought a brooder, which seems to be pretty commonly used, but it has no temperature control -- it just has a heat lamp so essentially the chicks temperature control themselves, by either being close to...

Handicap chick? Don't know what to do

Two days ago this egg started hatching (our first ever actually!) but by yesterday, he was still barely out so we decided to assist him. He was a bit floppy, for lack of a better word, but thought maybe after a while he would be able to start standing and such. Nearly a day later now, and he's...

    Basics

So, another newbie not bothering to check the FAQs and wants to ask the basic "how much space do my chickens need" question... super annoying, I know! But rest assured that I have looked but am still confused as all over the internet I am finding very different information, I am afraid! So am...
