    Unabsorbed yolk sack or ???

One of the chicks that hatched out during the night - two nights ago - had a mess on it that looks like a pasty butt, but when I looked at it, it looks like it has an outty belly button. The 'outty belly button' looks like it might be about as big around as a regular pencil and has a yellowish...

What to do with hatched chicks?

I have pips! When should I remove the chicks from the inbator and put them in the brooder? Should I leave them in the incubator until they are dry and fuzzy, or from some of the other posts I've read about messy stuff - should I take them out and clean them up with moist towel, then put them...

Introducing baby guinea chicks to a broody hen...

We have 3 - 1 week old baby guineas. We also have a hen that went broody and has been sitting on a nest of eggs 4-6 days. We want to go out at night, steal her eggs and put them in the incubator, and put the baby guineas under her. The baby guineas at 1 week old look like brand new baby...

These were shipped Saturday from MM. Got them this mornig here in NE West Virginia. So they may have been exposed to some crappy weather the past few days. Anyway, a few of them are really not getting motivated and not seeming to be eating. I have been using a dropper and giving them water...

    Broody hen left eggs...

We had a hen that has been setting on eggs for almost 3 weeks now. Well, mistake or not, we needed to move from where she was sitting. We put her in a dog house with a box in it. Filled the box with wood shavings and such placed her eggs and her in it late yesterday evening hoping she would stay...

    How to determine egg size?

My son is doing a 4-H project for egg-layers chickens. We are trying to find out what the proper way is to determine the egg size (small, medium, large, extra-large, jumbo, etc...) I know there are scales out their, but they must be based soley on weight. Is that the only method (shape is not...

What color eggs will this produce?

We have an Americauna rooster and we have hens (a mix of Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, and Black Australorp). We are wondering what color eggs the offspring from these mixes would produce? Would the mixed hens lay either brown eggs or the colored eggs? Or, would they lay a mix of them all?, Or...

    Hens with bare backs...

We had (until this past weekend) 5 roosters and 8 hens - I know, the ratio was way wrong, but we were supposed to have gotten 3 roos and 8 hens - and were going to remove two roos after deciding which one we liked best. Anyway, late last week I noticed that most of the hens had small bald...

    Chick brooder stinks!!!!

I have 13 cornish x's and 13 egg-leyers (Orpingtons, Australorps, and Rocks) in the brooder. They are separated by a partition down the middle. The egg-layers are good at scratching the pine shavings/dirt/etc... and keeping their area dry and non-smelly, but the cornish x's are not doing this...

Hope this works, first time trying to incorporate a picture in a post here. The first picture is at 4 days old and the last two pics are at 12 days old. I found a few pictures that look very similar, but I haven't seen enough yet to know how exact they need to look to be a match - as...
