    Someone crowed!

We thought we heard a crow the other morning. There are 2 suspects. Here they are: #1 is my rescue chicken - was found wandering the streets at the tender age of 4-6 weeks old. S/he is very inquisitive and fearless, friendly and affectionate. Loves to hang with his peeps (humans). Doesn't...

    Lawn Fertilizer

My gardeners put out fertilizer against our wishes on Thursday. How long before it's safe for the hens to roam again? Yes, I'm livid. My husband was able to round them up and get them into their coop before any of them ingested it. They do not spend much of their time in the lawn, but they...

Ancona Owners - when did your cockel start crowing?

We're still debating on our Ancona (pullet or hen). They are 13 weeks old. When did your Ancona roo start crowing? Are they early crowers or late? Fingers crossed for a roo that doesn't crow much. ;-) I'd keep him and hope my neighbors wouldn't say much. My closest neighbor suffers from...

    Dirt in the Coop?

Hi, do any of you put some dirt in for the chickens to dust off with? We're using the deep litter method so there is no place for them to burrow into the ground. We do let them out most days for a few hours to range and they love digging and laying in the cool earth. I'm thinking about the...

Pullet or Roo? 10 wk old Ancona

I'm pretty sure this cutie is an Ancona. But pullet or roo? Paige is 10/11 wks old now. No roo sounds yet. But that comb/waddle color has me wondering. I don't understand the hind feather or round vs pointy feather thing others have spoken about. Let me know your opinion please...

    Coop Lovers?

It's beautiful weather and when I go to the yard to check on the chicks they are all cooped up! I'm surprised that they spend so much time in the coop when they can be outside in the sunshine. Is this normal? They're 9/10 weeks old.

    Winter Garden for the Hens

Any recommendations on veggies to put in the ground & grow for the hens? I was thinking that they love any time of green, but beyond that I'm stumped. Thanks!

Light for my Girls and cooling ideas

We've had the girls out in the coop since they were about 5 weeks old. They're about 8 weeks old now and doing great. After reading too much info in the books, I'm totally confused about the light/heat. It's very warm here now and no additional heat is needed at night. In fact, we've been...

    Ancona or Silver Spangled Hamburgs?

I'm taking votes. They are the top birds in the flock, agressive and flightly, plenty of personality and they often face off with the other birds with their hackles/feathers up. Beautiful and fun to have, without a doubt.

4+ week old mottled pullets - what are these?

I can't figure out what these are (there is a second one just like her not shown! I got them from the feed store and they buy the assorted packs of chicks from McMurray hatchery (I think, it's one of the big hatcheries). Any thoughts? I'm really enjoying having pet chickens! They are so...

Sunning? 3 wk old chicks fanning wings out and lounging to the side

We put out chicks into the coop today and most of it is shaded but there is a little bit of sun in one area. 2 of them layed down there to the side, fanned their wings out and appeared to go to sleep. Another walked on them and they got right up but then fanned their wings out again. What is...
