My BBW hen went broody again this week. I have no tom but was contemplating letting her hatch some chicken chicks. Has anyone had a BBW successfully raise chicks? My biggest fear is her accidentally crushing the chicks, she is a plus sized lady as you can imagine.
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) 2 year old Buff Orpington hen, currently molting, but has been thin for about 6 months.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? ~6 months maybe longer
4) Are other birds...
This is Patty and I'm hoping is a she, about 12ish weeks. What color eggs? I can't tell (because I"m not good at it) what kind of comb this is going to be. Dark Brahama Dad, EE Mom. Body wise she is like a stocky EE, kind of cute!
I have a hen that won't leave the coop with her chick. Cordelia is 7-10 days old now, seems to really want to be outside but Mama doesn't seem to have any interest in going out with her. I can't imagine she doesn't feel safe, there is another hen with 2 chicks that hatched Sunday that came out...
I had 2 eggs under a cuckoo Marans hen, her first brood. Yesterday I found a partially hatched chick in a smashed shell. I figured she had accidently broken it and discarded it. This am I checked and could see the second chick was hatching. Went out a bit later and heard the chick crying and...
This is Blue and (s)he was hatched on 5/29 and (s)he is Blue Andalusian X EE. My bet is little roo from the comb and wattles already appearing. Anyone want to make a guess? I'll update every once in a while.
Should I move them out of the coop into the cooler garage or leave them alone. One is getting day old chicks on Thursday and the other one won't hatch hers until the end of the month. I have another hen in the garage because that is where she picked to nest.
Where I live we are more used to...
I gave one of my roosters to a neighbor up the street on Wednesday evening. My DH just got home from work and found him in the yard wandering around. I called the lady and told her she was a piece of crap for just dumping him off without at least letting me know he was coming back Should I...
I took a stool sample to the vets office this am to have her check for worms since the girl's laying is starting to pick up and I would rather throw out 12 eggs now instead of 25 eggs in a month or two if they need to be wormed. The sample I took came back positive for Coccidosis which is quite...
I have an almost 6 week old chick ( I lost her sibling last week) that has been brooded inside the house with her Mama. Mama is a house chicken in the winter due to feathering issues. I'm not sure what to do with the chick when it comes time to be away from Mama. The outside flock free ranges...
My Amy Duck who is a Runner started laying in August (she was born early April), one first thing every morning. The crazy girl was reliable if nothing else. (I love the big character that she is). The beginning of October we tore down the big barn that the birds (Amy and 30ish chickens) were...
What age should my runner start laying? (she was born mid april) I have been finding a really light green egg in the morning that I thought was an easter egger egg and the lightbulb came on today that they might be duck eggs. How do I tell if it is a duck or hen egg? Its about the size of a...
My favorite girl Jojo hasn't been acting herself since Monday/Tuesday, she could have been sick over the weekend but I wasn't home to see her. I noticed she was laying around the coop Monday but that is not unusual with the birds, it is a very large building and they hang out inside like they...
I have 2 little chicks (a blue Andelusean and a Spangled Hamburg 6 weeks tomorrow) that have been raised by 3 silkie hens. These hens are pretty low in the pecking order. Will the chicks by default be lower too?
I feel bad for these two because even the Mamas seem mean to them. Tonight...
My poor frazzled cochin Plucky is completely bald. Its starting to get chilly here so I made her a little fleece jacket. First try didn't turn out too bad.
I had 3 Buff Orpingtons go broody on me, each has her own space in a little room off the main coop where its a little quieter but they are all in a row right next to each other. I received 20 chicks in the mail Wed am and split them up between the three of them. Yesterday I was gone and came...
I just notice my girl Phyllis looks like this today. It doesn't seem to be weeping and she doesn't seem to be bothered by it. She breathes normally. Should I leave it alone or try to do something?
